Towing Question for Touareg Owners

I am in a pickle here. Our '08 Touareg has the wiring harness that came with a factory tow package, but it does not have the wire for the trailer brakes in that harness, so we cannot install a brake controller. We took it to a trailer shop to have them install the wire and controller, but they could not figure out how and told us we would need a Prodigy RF (remote) brake controller. Further research has uncovered issues with the Touareg communicating with the brake controller and we don't have room for it on the A-frame because of our anti-sway WD hitch....so here is my question:

What do you use for a brake controller? Did you wire it and install a traditional one yourself? Do you drive without trailer brakes?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Go to this site Club Touareg Forums and do some searching. Some models came with the harness wrapped in foam and stuffed wayyyy up under the dash. My 2004 had this. On my 2007, I had to buy the module for the harness at the hitch but run two wires up to the dash to the brake controller and connect under the panel by the right tail light. Have no idea why VW left this out, but it was fairly easy to run under the back seat, carpet and sill plates.

Can not remeber the details but Club Touareg.com has the answer to your question. You just need to do some searching over there for your 2008. Someone has already done this and posted directions and photos. Then you can hook up whatever BC you want.

I have a 2008 Touareg with after market Controller. The wiring is tucked up under the dash but already in place. There should be no need for a remote controller. The Controller installation should be pretty straightforward. You will find some instruction over at Clubtouareg or your VW dealer should be able to do this.

Thank you so much. My husband found the cord, way up under the dash and wrapped in foam. A solution is in sight!

It may seem daunting but it's not, go wired!
