Thanks to everyone for all the tips. I'll keep looking for something bigger. Maybe something will show up at the right price and size.
Good for you! Keep looking and the right truck will soon show up! As DFord79 very well puts, bigger is always better. Well, it does when buying a truck! Going up the Big Horn with our 22' with 5.3L complete tow package was just OK. At 8,800 feet the 6.2L would have been better and going down was no fun either but you figure that out in time. That's what downgearing is all about. Either you will find the truck or the truck will find you! Good luck and keep us posted!

I have a '97 F-150 with a 4.6L and 3.73 diff. I have a 22' CCD. I wish I had something a little more powerful to tow in the mountains. Next truck will probably be an F-150 with a 5.4L. You don't need a 3/4 ton Super Duty or a diesel for the 22', but it would be a nice addition to your garage.

Hello ,
Just for some info ,the 300 cid 6 is a 5.0 litre ,yet still a 6 .The 4.6 liter
is smaller in displacement .The 6 is great on torque ,thats what you need ,but its less horse power than the 4.6 .So both engines are too small
and the 300 truck is not equipped for towing ,radiator and so on are
designed for the truck as it is (light duty) .The 5.4 is about a 330 cid V-8
The GM 5.3 is a 327 cid for comparison . The older ford 5.8 V-8 is a 351 cid.
And the 5.7 GM is a 350 cid .You really want the 5.4 minimum . I run
a 396 cid IH engine in the travelall and cubes are the name of the game .
A note from Canada DON"T There is no replacement for displacement
currently have a 97 f 150 4wd sc 4.6 eng marginal towing with a 64 Trade wind Looking at a 05 Dodge with a 5.7 Hemi right now , looking for feedback on that truck
Ditto RSEAGLE. I have a 2005 F-150 SuperCab with the 5.4 pulling a 03 22AS. Empty weight is 4k and gvwr is 5k. Tows like I hardly know it's there. I'd suspect the 4.6 is a little weak.

We have a Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.9L gas engine and a 4.10 rear end pulling our 22' CCD. The AS weighs right around 5000 lbs when towing. My truck originally came with a 3.55 rear end, which resulted in weak towing in the western mountains. I've since replace the rear end with a 4.10 and it tows beautifully. I've pulled the CCD with the new setup in some pretty serious mountains in some pretty serious hot weather (105 degrees +) with no problems. Based on my experience, you would be seriously underpowered with the 4.6L and 3.55 rear end except when towing on flat terrain. Hope that's helpful.

Hi, Wow. Everyone has good information and advice; But I still wanted to get in on this. First thing that hit me was the 3.55 differential ratio. Virtually all Ford vehicles, with the factory tow package, come with a 3.73 ratio differential. So if you are towing with a Ford, first look for the 3.73 differential. [3.55 not good for towing] Next, the 4.6 L engine is a great engine, but too small. [281 cubic inches] The 5.4 L engine, in most cases, is just a stroked 4.6 L engine with a taller block to accept a 5/8" stroke increase makeing some usable towing torque. [330 cubic inches] Will that F-150 work? Yes. Will you and everyone else on the road be happy with it? No.
