You're so right about the dealer not giving me a deal on the 2500. She called back this evening and came all the way down to $47500 from 52,000 including all of the labor day and end of model year incentives. Not a deal I felt was worth considering.
I say it's overkill because it has a greater towing capacity. That's a good thing as most of us tend to "size up" over time. That's pretty much a part of the rationale I used when I bought the 2500.

As Robert said, take your time and enjoy the AS.

I took my 2002 sequoia with 190k miles on the 4.7L and my 29' Streamline Empress, 5400# loaded, on a 3000 mile trip from Memphis to Colorado and back. The hardest driving was across Kansas with wind and sway issues. I was able to climb the grades just ok. The curves kept the speed down when going up and down the mountains. The main reason for me to think about the 3/4 ton would be stability and road manners not just raw power. I had an 87 3/4 ton sub. as a dd once and loved it except for the 8mpg & 10mpg, city/highway. I never really tested its towing ability for all I had a the time was a 1k# popup.
