Tow Vehicle Tire Question

We have a 2001 F-150 Supercrew two wheel drive. Next summer we plan on going to the international in South Dakota then out the titons. My mechaniac says that I should get the next higher ply rating tires. Does anyone have sugestions on what kind to be looking for.

I have Yokohama Geolandar AT-S XL tires on the Tundra and I've been very happy with them sofar. Great in the snow and on pavement in the summer, no noise and seem to be lasting very well. The XL tires give me a 2400lb capacity at 51psi.

I would buy the Yokohama's again but I may go with Michelins to match the Airstream.

My father had two sets of continentals on his F250, The first set went bald at about 40,000miles, on the second set one front tire disentregated after about 20,000 miles, so I can't decide if they're good or bad.

I had General tires on the truck and they were so noisy you couldn't hear the radio on the highway.

I changed my tires on my F-150 to Michelin LTX and went one size larger ...... could not be happier

I have a '10 F150 crewcab. The original tires were" P"-rated which was too light duty. I ruined one on a c/g entrance road and had enough of the "P"s!
At 16,600 mi traded them for Michelin LTX M/S that are Load range "E". You can run as much as 80 psi. Now have nearly 40 K on them and doubt if they are half worn out. We have probably towed the AS for 30 K or more of the miles. I am very happy with them

As to quality, MICHELIN LTX MS/2 as the one from which to make comparisons (performance + longevity). OEM sizing.

An "E" Load Index [121] is a hard riding tire on a 1/2T, nor is it likely that the wheels are up to this job. The requirement appears to be around [109]; or, an XL tire.

Tire Rack (online) is a good place to make shopping comparisons (reviews, etc).

I'd also go with new shock absorbers. BILSTEIN blue/yellow HD series. See same source.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't put anything heavier than a "D" rated tire on a half ton truck. The reason is, even a "D" rated tire will carry more weight than the rest of the truck is rated for, the 65 lbs of air pressure in the rear tires should be more than stable enough for the job, and as Rednax says, the wheels probably aren't rated for any more pressure than that. Brand of tire????? There's lots of them to choose from.
