This pretty much parallel's my experience.
I had a GMC Sierra 1500
gasser when we bought the AS - it was fine with our previous 27ft SOB (much lighter than our present AS).
I did tow with it for a while and in a pinch could have kept it, but I just felt it to be marginal. Switched to a Sierra 2500HD Diesel and much happier - for me it was the right move and I am glad I made the change. A much more relaxing experience no matter where we travel, and a better matched TV IMHO.
If you already have the 1500
, why not give it a try?
