tongue weight classic 27FB

It would appear that our 27FB classics tongue weight is more than advertised by the airstream specs. Specs say 750lbs but the cat scale says 1250lbs loaded ready to go streaming. No liquids in tanks, propane bottles 3/4. Any one have any thoughts on this I would appreciate any input. Thanks

Curious about the weighing procedure, connected to truck, weight distribution set, trailer level, disconnected, tongue jack resting on scale, type of w.d. hitch, or . . .

It does not surprise me that the figures don't match. Much depends on add on's at the factory and how you load the coach. Regardless of the tank levels.
If you want to weigh the coach tongue you can do it with a couple of boards and a bathroom scale.
Look it up on the Internet. "How to measure tongue weight with a bathroom scale".

Quit wasting your money with cat scales. Get something like this for the exact tongue weight and use dot scales for free. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007REK28M...=I7EPXXHK8DII1

Trouble is, only the CAT or truck scale can tell you how much weight the trailer tongue adds to the truck after weight distribution is applied.
The tongue weight scale has less value.

Doug, sorry about the dumb question, but what's the CAT? Thanks, Rich

Welcome to the heavy tongue weighted Classics. My 2008 25fb Classic is 1100 to 1200lbs. Nature of the beast.

It's a great mix to have airstream under value the tounge weight and truck manufacturers over value the payload!

For Kelvin and OP:

Is that just tongue weight? Or does it include the hitch? WD on or off? Airstream's tongue weights are typically low. I had heard that attributed to them being specified when the trailer was unloaded, but a 500# difference seems extreme.

My 2002 Classic 30 Slideout has about 950# as we camp, measured on a Sherline scale. I know the FBs are heavier, but that seems like a lot. I haven't weighed it on a scale yet, so I know the WD off weight will be 150# heavier due to the hitch but the WD when applied should shift some of that back to the trailer.

My understanding....

....TW is what the tongue weighs, level, loaded for camping and un-hitched, no WD involved.
WD's job is to re-distribute the weight to maintain stability.
Hitched, loaded & level, w/WD set, I have 1080lb added to the TV rear axle.

Tongue weights vary by procedure. A forum member with a ProPride hitch placed a tongue weight scale under the tongue jack post, and then again under under the ProPride stinger where it goes into the truck receiver. The difference was 200 lbs.

Does the tongue weight tell you how much weight will be added to the tow vehicle when hitched with a weight distribution hitch? No. The weight distribution hitch will cause most, but not all, of the tongue weight to be carried by the truck's axles, and some of it by the trailer's axle(s).

More importantly, it will cause some of the tongue weight (as well as some of the truck bed weight) to be carried by the tow vehicles front axle, an important safety factor for steering and braking, and to help ensure the tow vehicle's axle are not overloaded.

So go ahead and weigh your trailer tongue, but only a CAT scale can give you these important axle weights.

There are Dot scales all over the country that are free. They dont give the fancy print out but that dosent matter to me. The cat scales are about $8 per weight, that adds up in a hurry.

It's important to weight the dead tongue weight (before weight distribution kicks in) to make sure you are not exceeding the receiver ratings.

I have a 2008 Classic Ltd. 27FB and recently did the CAT scale weigh in. Trailer only shows the TW at 1080# with 1 40 gal propane tank full. Not fully loaded for camping, but close.

The important thing was that the current WD setup UNLOADED the front axle 230# over the empty truck alone. I have readjusted the WD and the truck now measures level Front ~ Rear w/ trailer attached and loaded. Tomorrow I am going over the CAT scales again to get new weights. That will tell me if I need any further adjustments.

$10 once a season...I can live with that. If we have a pronounced change in loading....$20.

Our 31' 2014 Classic tongue weight reached 1,375 pounds on my individual wheel weight scales with the ProPride hitch head installed, two full 40 pound propane tanks, four Lifeline 92 pound model 6ct 300 amp-hour 6Vdc batteries and their associated stainless steel enclosure mounted on the "A" frame. The weight was reduced to under 1,200 pounds when the Lifeline batteries and enclosure were removed and a 168 pound 600 amp-hour lithium battery was installed under the front sofa along side the existing Magnum MS-2812 inverter/charger.

Our 2013 25FB International Serenity had a literature tongue weight if 833 pounds. With the Hensley Arrow hitch head installed, two full 30 pound propane tanks and full water, the tongue weight was 1,150 pounds on the selling dealer's lot.

There's a hell of a difference between the U.S. and Cdn. dollars.
AND; it's a long time fact that even when the dollar is par, we WILL pay more for anything from the States imported to Canada.
