Talking Tailgate / camper jack interference

Wow, it is nice to be back to where I do not have to unhitch our AS to drop the tailgate on our truck. Not all trucks we have used as TV would allow easy entry to the truck bed by fully dropping the tailgate while the AS was hitched up.

Please note that on level ground, the Chev 2500HD will clear (by ~5/16') the camper jack on the AS for this model year. Yahoo!

Airstream power jacks can be rotated 90 degrees to face the drivers side. This allows most tailgates to clear the power head.

Would NOT clear THE POST with our Ram 2500; thankful for the Duramax!

Nasty!! That's worthwhile info!

I believe that Dodge and Ford trucks have slightly taller boxes (and correspondingly taller tailgates) than Chevys.

I know that Honda 3000 will fit in most Dodge/Fords, won't fit under the tonneau in my 2014 Sierra.

Look for an optional hitch bar that is longer. Mine has two holes for the pins, 1,000 lb TW or 1,500lb TW. THis was confirmed with the manufacture....Reese. 1,000 pin clears by less than 1/4" and 1,500 pin by 1.5+".

I have seen longer hitch bars with varying TW.

This is the answer. Our Ram 2500 tailgate clears the jack with an inch to spare, because I was careful to order a hitch bar that was long enough.

You replaced your Dodge with a Chevy so the tailgate will clear the jack ?

Seriously, I know this is off topic, but why the switch?

My Tundra's tailgate goes all the way down when the Airstream is hitched with the Equal-i-zer.
The tailgate would not go all the way down with the previous sob trailer and an EazLift.

No clearance issues at all with a Tacoma and a PP setup. Was vet close with the shorter Husky WD only setup.

So does my Dodge Ram with the flag pole holder on the front of the hitch! Wonder if that will change when I swap to a Propride.

Probably. ProPride stinger plus mechanism is considerably longer than stock setup. We got. Lot more clearance from the PP setup--I just don't have a measurement on it--maybe a foot or better?

Our Tundra's tailgate wouldn't clear the power head on the jack, so I rotated it 90 degrees to face the curb side (it would rotate either direction) - all it took was loosening three setscrews - and now it clears by about 1/2". The stinger and ball head assembly are standard Reese.

Wow, I didn't even think of that - I am going to go outside and spin it around right now! Thanks!

Can you rotate the head only or do you have to rotate the whole jack?

Thanks

The head only rotates. It takes about one minute with an Allen wrench. We had to do this on Little Lucy as we could not open the door to the truck camper when hooked-up.

Great that makes it a lot easier.

Thanks

But now the jack light doesn't shine down on the coupler. I have the older style Barker where the head assembly is 90 deg off the center line and the light is pointed to the hitch. My Tundra tailgate clears. The three holes in the base of the jack will only line up with the holes in the A frame on way.

Curious... is the caution tape functional or decretive?
