A friend from our local WBCCI unit volunteered to help my wife learn. There were 6 lessons, one with just the truck, and the last was with me along to get used to the idea of my wife driving. It worked perfectly - my wife and I shared the driving on our trip to Disney a few weeks ago. I'd try to find someone like that willing to help.

Both at the DenCO May Maintenance Rally and the RMVAC Rally we usually have a special Ladies' Towing Clinic. No boys allowed! We start off with how to hitch-up the trailer, the basic principals of towing and backing in a safe environment where women can ask the questions they are sometimes embarassed to ask their male counterparts. It's a fun learning experience for women who have never wanted to do it themselves before. It's really empowering to some and fun for those of us who tow by ourselves often to share what we have learned.

We've even had a few 'Ladies Only' weekend camping trips spring forth from this - and those are lots of fun! You should see the looks we all get pulling into a campground together, parking and doing it all ourselves! Quite the spectacle - in a good way!

The best way to learn is to go find a big empty parking lot and lay out some cones and just practice. You'll be a pro before you know it!

In our case, it was nothing that formal - just a woman from the local unit. But this sounds like a great idea!

There is an rv driving instructor at Lazy Days in Tucson. Lessons are by appointment and the instructor has an office in the service center. Location is Irvington Exit off I-10. Turn left on Irvington and left into Lazy Days by Camping World.

Ours too, but several of us ladies have many, many miles under our belts solo. We do the demos in a real low-key manner that makes it approachable and "less scary" for the inexperienced. The fun thing is, every time we have some newbies leave the rally with the men in the passenger seat!

There is an aerospace defense contractor who builds a very sophisticated driving simulator. It can do everything from a 1/2 ton pickup with a trailer to a 40 foot bus to a tandem trailer semi. You can set it to weather conditions or any kind of traffic. It is a marvelous and safe learning tool, expensive at a 100k plus. I use simulators in my driving school and have thought about buying one of these to do pre-hire testing of commercial truck drivers and have talked to a couple of RV dealers about them giving their customers lessons on the sim. Interesting fact, I can run a kid who has never driven a car through 17 hours on the simulator and they can actually drive the first time behind the wheel of a car. Technology kicks butt!

Here is a RV driving school that has been teaching people to drive RV's since 1991.

Home

I hope this helps.
