New Jeep Gladiator vs Ford F-150

I"m towing my 22' International with a 2014 F-150. It does fairly well in the flatlands but struggles considerably on steep inclines/declines in the mountains where I live. I use an equalizer hitch, load the camper with about 250 lbs of additional weight, and load the truck with about 700 lbs of additional weight that includes me, my wife, a dog and almost all of our camping gear.

If I traded the F-150 for one of the upcoming new Jeep Gladiators, I'm wondering has anyone looked closely enough at the specs to know if I'd be worsening my towing problems? Thanks for any insight, Terry

I don't see how the Gladiator beats the f-150 on towing capacity, but loot at the engines being offered. I believe it with only come with a 2.4L turbo 4 or the 3.6L v-6. Do you really what to tow with those?

Jeep should have some specs out, if not now, soon.

Not sure what your F150 is...several F150's with different engines. The 5.0V8 should do real well, but the V6 Echoboost has more HP and torque than the V8; either should pull that 22' with no problems! You left a lot of information out of your description. The jeep if equipped properly, should be fine also for that size AS. When comparing to a jeep, you also should think about how/what you intend to do with your TV while pulling the AS...like, carrying a generator, firewood, a bbq, a gas can or propane, etc...would you be carrying anything like that in the back of a jeep? Also, payload...don't overlook payload which you can find on the inside of the vehicle you decide to purchase...note the "payload should not exceed xxx" sticker which includes your passengers, your tongue weight of your AS, and any gear you intend to carry. You said around 700lbs...what is the hitch weight of your 22'AS...that could be around 660 lbs additional weight on your payload...be mindful of that.
Surprised about your comment on the F150 unless you perhaps have a smaller engine or something is wrong?

Just wondering - your f150 does have the tow package right? My 2009 f150 with 116,000+ miles on it has no issue pulling our 2014 25’ fc.

Also, consider overall reliability .

I pull our 30FC with a 2018 f150 3.5 EB with no issues. I’m not sure what engine you have in your F150. The gladiator will only have 2 engines the 3.6 Pentastar V6 and a year later the 3.0 eco diesel. Both engines will tow a sport 22 with no issues. Just remember the Jeep is narrower and you will be bouncing back and forth between the ruts in the road as I did with my 2016 Tacoma pulling out lance at the time.

Jeep's Gladiator page shows 7,650# towing capacity with 1,600# payload. That is a pretty healthy payload they're bragging about!

I have tow my 25’ Classic with my 2012 F150 eco boost engine with no problems all over the Rockies over 12,000 ft no problems. My trailer comes in around 6500 to 7000 lbs the way we load.

Hi, original poster's 2014 F-150 has a 5.0 L V-8 in it and should not have any problems towing a 22' Airstream.

I tow a 22 sport with my 2012 3.7l F150 4x4 and I barely feel it behind me. Not sure the gladiator will be better. But it does look like a nice ride.

Oops, forgot to mention my F-150 is the 5.0L. I don’t know what the tongue weight is, but yes, it has the towing package. Like I said, though, it does fine on the flats. It’s only on the steep ascents and descents that it struggles. Oh sure, I can punch it to the floor going up, or drop it to second gear going down, but I worry about the rpm’s when the truck is screaming over 5k.

Did I read one of the posts correctly that the Gkadiator has the same 4-cyl motors as the newer F-150’s?

Hi,

I took a look at the web site and noticed the “up to” prefix on load capacity and towing capacity. If you look at the data on the Overland model the fine print said “up to 6000lb towing capacity”, whereas other places give a 7000+ figure for the Gladiator lineup in general.

Looks like a real cool vehicle. I think it’s capacities will be a function of how it’s equipped.

I would think your F-150 would be fine towing your 22’. Sure you’ll downshift and increase revs to maintain speed through the Rockies, but that’s how a gas engine develops it’s torque to pull up grade. Going downhill, make sure your brake controller is properly adjusted.

You should look at what the axle ratio is in your truck. Even though it has a tow package it could have a 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, or a 4.10 axle ratio depending on how it was ordered new. A 3.31 axle is not going to be as good towing as a 3.73. The 5.0 engine should have no problem with a 22' AS. Take it to a good independent shop with a Dynamometer and have it evaluated.

Trade the Ford for a new Ford with the proper tow package and 4 wheel drive. Problem well solved.

Sounds like you need a better towing F250 diesel not a lighter JEEP Gladiator.

Couple comments; no, not same 4-cyl in F150 and the Jeep. The Ford smaller 4-cyl is an turbo powered Echoboost...you don't want that engine if your planning on towing a reasonable sized AS...get the 6cyl EB engine...you will be happy.

Your comment on the 5.0 leader is still puzzling; but perhaps the rear end gearing, as someone here mentioned, is the wrong size; that can certainly affect your speed/ability when towing.

Both the 5.0 and 6cyl EB engines in the newer F-150s, also now offer the 10 speed transmission so you should get excellent performance with plenty torque/hp pulling your AS no matter which rear end it has. But to be sure, get the tow/haul package. The electronics in the newer F150's when in tow/haul mode, will help keep you very comfortable going up/down mountains with your AS.

My Ford is 4-wheel drive and has the 3.73 axle ratio. I really appreciate all your reply’s. The only reason I’m considering the Gladiator is because I really like the looks, it’s more unique (there’s hundreds of F-150’s in our town) and I’m thinking it’s maybe a more-maneuverable daily driver.

Another thing to remember is the Gladiator's box is very small and not deep.......If your like me and you carry all kinds of goodies in your box you may miss the F150 bigger box. When I bought my f150 I got the scab to have a bigger box even though I would of preferred the 4 full doors.

The specs say 1600# payload? I would challenge that with the one on the door sticker for Payload...bet you it ain't 1600# But, surprise me...send us a picture....would be great if it was.

OP- With a 22', your likely going to be fine towing with either one, but given your comments about the F150 V8 sluggish up/down mountain highways...I would try the Jeep out in similar conditions and then drive your F150 on same roads...if you can do it pulling your AS, even better, but I would be very surprised to see the Jeep outpull the F150 V8 when pulling your 22'. Looking forward to your selection and what you find out.
