Red face ML320 cdi for 25' Serenity?

We have a recently purchased 2015 25' Serenity. We now have an opportunity to purchase a 2007 MB ML320 Cdi which my wife LOVES. Have read elsewhere that late 2007 models were rated at 7000lbs towing capacity. Would love to hear feedback on this choice. There seems to be some controversy in places online over the rating of the hitch. The GVWR is about 6240 and its rated at 298 ft lbs torque, which is said to be there thru the entire range. Wanting to please my wife but not at the expense of her safety...

Update: We decided to wait on this since we are under no pressure to buy anything right now. Thanks!

Hi Gary

It is actually 398 pounds of torque not that 298 would not be enough.

I tow with an 08 320 CDI and tow a 30 classic. Overall I find the ML a decent TV. I've towed coast to coast and usually take long trips with it. I love the vehicle for it's comfort and fuel economy. It however does cost more to repair and maintain than some of the others I have owned, but it is the most powerful vehicle I have owned and by far the best TV. It's electronics are somewhat unreliable, but that has all been covered under warranty so far. It recently did break down while towing. The fuel filter leaked onto the port inlet shut off motor causing it to go into a reduced power mode. It was a very expensive repair and took 2 days out of my vacation to run it into the nearest dealer 3+ hours away. Fortunately we still made it to destination, but I hope that this was an isolated incidence.

320 CDi rating

Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you know what the manufacturer tow rating is on your vehicle?

You have to be careful with tow ratings with European vehicles. Weight distribution hitches and electric brakes are outlawed. Typically we can tow much more here in North America with the use of weight distribution hitch.

With the changes that CanAm made to the vehicle the hitch has no problem of supporting the weight and with the use of the WD hitch it compresses both the front and back of the vehicle evenly. I believe the tow rating from MB is 7200.

Very interesting - I decided to wait rather than buy the ML320 for towing our 25' Serenity. I down loaded the manual and it said it was rated at something like 4800 lbs with the tongue weight about 500. For future reference though, I would love to know about the modifications CanAm made and what is a WD hitch - sorry, I am such a beginner, I just don't know the acronyms. Thanks for your info!

We towed our 2013 25FB International Serenity home through the mountains from Los Angles to Phoenix on I-10 using our October 2006 build 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI with 4Matic, air ride suspension and a Hensley Arrow hitch.

I took the car from Phoenix to CanAm in London Ontario to have the factory installed receiver (was rewelded by a factory recall) reinforced. In the "Images" below my Avatar is a photo showing the 2"x2" steel bar reinforcement installed by CanAM. They also modified the straight Hensley stinger (goes between the female opening on the Hensley Arrow and the female opening of the car receiver) by cutting about five inches off of the car end bringing the trailer closer to the car as well as pre-bending it slightly downward to preload the weight distribution hitch.

It was not until January of 2007 that Mercedes wired the trailer brake system from the right rear to the front of the car. Thus we had to use the Tekonsha Prodigy RF brake controller which has an issue of pulsating brake application at the rate of the turn signals. There is no work around on my car for this issue.

The Airstream Literature tongue weight of 833 pounds was 1,150 pounds on my Shoreline scale at the dealership with the Hensley hitch head installed, the street and curb side awnings dealer installed, the factory installed 600 watt inverter and full water and propane tanks.

The 25FB with me in the car and empty crossed the CAT scales and the car axle weights were below the maximum numbers on the driver's door post. After loading the trailer for camping, full diesel fuel tank, the wife and and I in the car and some gear in rear of the car, the CAT scales reported overloaded car axles.

The trailer weighed about 6,960 pounds and the engine was not as happy pulling that load. The tongue weight after we had moved things around was 1,175 pounds camping ready.

We acquired a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 HD Cummins and that solved all the towing issues. It is now towing our 2014 31' Classic. The Mercedes is now towing our 2015 23D and all the CAT scale numbers work out when camping ready.
