Lucky brakes...

Decided to tow 65 gt 20 miles from place of purchase. I jacked both sides, bearings looked good and wheels tuned freely with just a slight scraping noise. Experinced some lurching on 2 occasions at about 25mph. Got home and have now disassemled hub. Pictures tell the rest of story. I should have followed my first instinct and gone with flatbed delivery

Ya Think? I don't see how that was done. Very interesting.

At least when you are done you will have complete brand spanking new brakes.

Hi, I don't think the flatbed would have helped very much; Looks like the damage was already done before you bought it. Either way, you still need a loaded backing plate assembly.

Yes, get the whole backing plate package. While you are at it see that you don't need a new axle. I put new brakes on our '66 Trade Wind last year and planned for new axles this year. But discovered that the work I did putting new brakes on was for naught. The old backing plate doesn't fit the new axles (tandem). If you were closer I'd give you the new, slightly used brakes but the shipping would not be worth it. Check the axle though.

Do your new axle and brakes all at the same time. Makes sense, saves time and frustration later and gives you peace of mind......just my two cents worth

Thanks for replies. I'll do the whole thing together for efficiency and peace of mind. I posted a thread in "axels" with pictures of axel movement. When I jacked the trailer it appeared to move about 1 3/4" but when i tested the swing arm it barely moved 1/2"
