Our 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI diesel reached 205,000 miles and the death rattles started. The ML was the tow vehicle of choice for our 2015 23D. The 2012 Ram also had a Hensley stinger from towing the 25FB with the Hensley Hitch that migrated to the 23D. But we wanted a more modest size you vehicle for the 23D. We just bought one of the last 2021Toyota Land Cruisers. It does not have a solid rear axle. It has the necessary payload to handle our stuff we took in the ML.
We are adding an Australian 12.5 gallon auxiliary gasoline tank above the spare tire as the milage numbers are not too great. The Mercedes lasted 14 years. I expect the Land Cruiser to last just as long as we will not be putting such milage on it as I did the Mercedes. At age 76, the itch to drive from Phoenix to Bloomington Indiana in two days just does not exist any more.
We are working with A&P Trailer Works in Texas to tweak the 23D for off road exploring by installing a 3" lift, switching to new 3,600 pound axles with disc brakes (possibly with ABS) and some inside touch up work ;like a new thermostat and television.
If we want a long road trip with all the amenities, we have the 2012 Ram 2500HD Cummins pulling our 2014 31' Classic. Like at the Post Office, if it fits it ships.
My scales will really help in setting up the rig. I know the 23D number for each individual wheel and axle as well as the tongue weight . I will soon have similar numbers for the Land Cruiser. Knowledge is power.
