Leaking rear axle seals - darn

Before I pick up my AS, I dropped my truck off for an oil change, tire rotation and a look over.

My mechanic tells me that the rear axle seals are leaking "a little". He said he called the local Chevy dealer and it's still under warranty, so to take there and let them change them out.

They can't do it til Tuesday or Wed.

My guy says he wouldn't tow 5000+ until they were fixed.

So... now I gotta wait to pick up. Bummer.

Yeah I agree. Glad I had everything looked over!!! My mechanic, whom I've known for years, said everything else was in tip top shape, even commenting about how clean it was all the way around. So good news there.

Yep, going in the shop on Tuesday. Hopefully they won't take too long. But I have to go do a show in Austin the following weekend - which is in the opppposite direction of picking up my airstream.... The dealer is kinda wanting me to come on and get it.

Leaking Seals don't affect the carrying capacity of the bearings!....that being said, if one lets go you will lose the Differential pretty quickly if you are towing.

On this Topic, how many of you out there use synthetic fluid in your Diff. I switched to synthetic for my Dakota at the first scheduled change and the rear end looks brand new after 140,000 miles; about 50,000 under tow conditions

Just had my Tundra's rear diff oil changed (56k miles) but the dealer just puts in non-synthetic oil. I've never used synthetic oil in any cars I've owned since it was introduced.

GM installs synthetic in trucks at the factory. Our fuel and lubes guys say it runs cooler, particularly under heavy loads (like towing), and lasts much longer. I wouldn't use anything else in a TV.

Most all newer pickups use synthetic in the transfer case and the differentials....

Are your axle seals truly "leaking" (as in puking??) or just "seeping??" There's a world of difference.

A seep won't hurt anything. Just make sure your gear oil is topped off.

I personally did not see them.. My mechanic used the word "leak" and stated they noticed oil on the back side of the rotor or brakes inducating something's going on, but since under warranty let Chevy fix at no cost. I go to a local I've known and trusted for years only touching Chevy when it's warranty.

So I don't have an answer to seeping or puking

My boat is sitting on a new trailer and they are begging me to come get it. I gotta go to Austin this weekend. I gotta go get my Airstream, and on top of it all, a new cable install in my house on Tue... haha
