Still searching for a tow vehicle for my '65 Overlander, dry weight about 4230 lbs. I'm looking for a van with a wheelchair lift, as a disabled family member wants to be an Airstreamer, too!
What is the minimum size engine that could do the job? I know a V8 would be needed, but, a V8 with how many liters?
Not knowing a whole lot about vans (or vehicles in general), are there models that I should avoid (i.e., 1500, 2500, 3500--or with Ford-150, 250, 350, etc.)?
Hi kdenault--A full size van makes a very good tow vehicle. I towed my 1973 27' Overlander, weighing 6400 lbs wet, for over ten years with 3/4 ton Chevy window vans, with 5.7 ltr V8, with 3.73, or 4.10 differential. Newer Chevy vans have 5.3 or 6.0 ltr V8. A wheel chair lift will add considerable weight to your van, and might only be available in a 1 ton van. To do the job you should be considering a 3/4 or 1 ton with 5.3 ltr and 4.10 diff., or 6.0 ltr and a 3.73 or 4.10 diff. You will get about the same gas mileage with any of the above, so go for the best performance which would be the largest engine, with the largest numerical diff., 4.10.
