With my CC Dually Long bed and a 31' Sovereign I am hitting around 54' total length, and it takes 40 acres to turn around in

Ford f-250 crew cab w/ full 8' bed, Sovereign 31' I'm about 54 feet.
The Wal-Mart parking lot isn't big enough for a U-turn.

Give me 40 acres, and I'll turn this rig around...
48', 21 for the truck, and 27 for the Overlander.

Hi Bob--Good question! Don't know how long my '27 Overlander is hooked up to my Suburban (will measure next time I hook up), but do know I can make a U-turn on a normal 2-lane road.--Frank S

Starting from back to front: Airstream 31, receiver 1, Suburban 18.5, front mounted bike rack 2.5 = 53 feet. Yikes! It doesn't seem that long when I'm driving

I posted this a couple of months ago...
Rig: F-250 4X4 and 1999 30' Excella WB - overall length 53 feet, with a Blue Ox WD hitch.
Our inside turn radius is 57 feet and the trailer tracks about six feet inside the truck at the bottom of the U-turn. I could have turned a little bit tighter, but didn't want to stress things - maybe I could have made the U-turn in 50 feet?
Background:
This one is just to put a data point out there for those who might have a similar rig (we have to build a driveway up a hill with multiple switch-backs, and we need to know the turn radius).
We took our rig to the local high-school parking lot and lined it up on one of the parking stripes. I marked the left truck and trailer tire positions with chalk, then began a left U-turn, turning hard but not absolute maximum.
When the truck was at the bottom of the U, I marked the front truck tire position. When the trailer tires passed the bottom of the U, I also marked their positions.
The measurements above are on the 'inside' of the rig during the turn. To get parallel to our original position, we had to go a little further to straighten out (+20 feet), but were able to use the parking stripes to measure directly across the top of the U.
We'll plan for 60' turn radius. Guess what... that's what the fire department has as a building code!

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 15 1/2 feet and 2002 25 ft Safari, 25 11= about 42 ft. total. Relatively easy to U Turn on a two lane road with decent shoulders.

I've got it easy comparred to most... With my bad-boy F350Super Duty Short box, I measure 19.5 on the truck and 19 foot Bambi... 38.5! ...but a mere whisp of a rig!
Hey -- Doesn't this make me a minimalist?
Wouldn't the tree huggers go nuts hearing this??? A Ford F350 with a turbo-diesel being classified as a minimalist!!!!!

I might point out the difference in turning radius between some of the older trucks and the newer generation IIRC the newest of the F350's can turn inside the radius of my 1996 beast ....good thing I have 40 acres to turn around in BTW I have noticed that Sam's Clubs and Walmart seem to have the largest parking spaces. You would think the freakin' lumber yards would, but it doesn't seem that way.

Aaron,
I too have a bunch of acreage, but we live up high on a hill on the property and the residual turn area is so tight, I am truly glad I choose the 19' rig. Had not even thougth about the difficulty turning and parking could be in a tight parking area. The drive is 1/4 mile from the road to the house. Too far to back up efficiently, (all steep uphill) and too small turn area at the top to be convenient. Very greatful to have a short trailer. I am certain I'd have to have had major surgery on my driveway to make more room if I had gone ANY larger. Turn-radius notwithstanding, these things do take a ton of real estate!
Regards,
Bill

Bill,
Mine is all downhill to the house then there is a huge hay field at the bottom. However we have the curse of overhanging trees on the "lane" that leads to the house(s) We live on the backside of the old family (wife's side) farm. IIRC the orginal was around 85 acres. We have the largest parcel left. Best part is no Homeowner's Association to deal with (if you don't count the PO'ed MIL when I leave the John Deere in the middle of the road ) I love it and never want to move. I currently have 2 Airstreams, a popup, 4 pickups a '76 Pace Arrow MoHo and god knows how many bicycles...try that in a suburban setting and that doesn't count the critters

When I go to Home Despot (no lumber yards here, they aren't sophisticated enough for the wanna-be snobs), my truck fills the parking space side-to-side, and sticks out about 4 feet in the back, with the front wheels hitting the concrete bumper.

We bought our first camper shortly after we were married (1981). A 1962 Yellowstone (Looks just like a Fred Flintstones Special) with all original stuff. We used that 13' trailer to death. What a great way to travel! My wife and I loved that rig! It was greatto have a trailer... finally. It leaked water in the front when we traveled and eventually got pretty bad. We never found the emotional strength to let that one go... It sits on the other side of our property waiting for time to restore it. It really is too cool, just very impractical. We then moved into a "newer" rig (Terry) that loved mice! What a pain! It was an 18 year old rig! Kept cleaning and plugging holes until I finally gave up!
This year I finally had it! Told my wife that our dream of owning an AS in retirement made very little sense to me. I thought if we waited for retirement we'd only have ten years to enjoy it (five of which we'd be heavily medicated) ---OR--- we could take the plunge now and enjoy it for 25 years. She agreed, and the rest is history. The Terry is gone and the AS is already heavily in use! Still planning one more trip this fall before it gets winterized and stored for the season. Already talking about next year's tripping!
I continually tease my wife about having a trailer in storage for years... Your's must have a field day with you!
We have a total of 53 acres up here. Sure is nice to have a little elbow room! We feel the same way. I can't imagine a better place in the world to live. If you ever get up this way, you 'll have to let us know!
Regards
