Here's a good example of too much trailer for the truck

I was perusing CL tonight and ran across this one: 1986 AVION 34' Tri axle rear bath

I thought it showed a perfect example of what NOT to use to tow a 34' trailer. I doubt you could torque the rear end of that truck enough to level that rig out.

I read the TW is #720 as it comes from the factory. That truck is a wimp.

My father used to have a 35' Avion (they called them 35'), and I can tell you they are heavy. I traded a 24' Argosy for a 23' Avion, and the Avion was much heavier than the Argosy, and harder to tow (not as aerodynamic).

I would want a 3/4 ton Diesel at minimum to tow that trailer.

Yuppers

On the iPad right now and can't zoom in close enough to confirm, but that sure looks like a 1500 series truck to me. Why do folks think this is an ok setup?

If u were wanting a good lawsuit that you know you could win, ( and there are peeps out there looking for this) well just get in front of that truck and " A deer ran out in front of me occifer" and it's all over. One good slam on the brakes while in front of him.....

In fishing terms, he's using ten lb test and fishing for Wahoo. One good bite and that line is gonna snap. Pretty foolish, not to mention dangerous in this case.
I rest my case, and i'll take the 60' Hatteras with the nice tuna tower over there plz.
Who wants to go offshore today in my nice new vessel?

From the window layout, that is a model 34V, which takes the tongue weight up to 765 lbs.

When I first saw the pictures, I knew that was a 1500 truck. Can't imagine someone seeing that and thinking it's OK.

I'm pulling a 22' with an F-150 and have to admit if I were gonna do it all over I'd either have a smaller trailer or more powerful truck -- probably a more powerful truck. Just returned from an 850 mile trip south on route 285 from Denver into the Taos, New Mexico, area, across NM east on route 160, and then back north up I-25. Some of the climbs had me pushing 5,000 rpm and some of the downhills had me at 5,500 rpm. That truck did some struggling, although I averaged slightly over 13 mpg. The truck did okay, but I felt like I was abusing it at times. I had no water in the trailer, and maybe only 300 lbs of gear, but I probably had about 800 lbs in the truck counting passengers and equalizer hitch. Does this sound normal, I hope?

It was common to tow a 34 with a car.

No problem here with our 1500 Ram

It all depends on how the 1500 is set up.. Our Tradesman is fitted with better springs than the normal town truck.. Its rated for a 10,000 lb. trailer. Not only do we pull our 27 foot Overlander but haul a 1200 lb. UTV in the back all the time with no problems.

Life may be grand for you in your power boat, but I wouldn't trade places with you. Oh, how many gallons / hour do you burn?

They may have made a nice little drawing of a car towing a 35' Avion to illustrate proper hitch setup, but it almost never happened. Please show us an actual picture of it happening.

My Father used a 3/4 ton Suburban with a 454 engine, and 3.73 gears, and it was just barely adequate. Made about 6 MPG doing it.

Believe me when I say there is a world of difference between towing a vintage 27' Airstream and a 35' Avion.

Agreed. My dad pulled his 1981 Avion 34V with a 1979 Ford F250 that had the big 460 in it. It did a nice job. Wasn't a hot rod, of course, but that sucker could pull that trailer down the road. I wish I still had that truck! It was a beautiful blue/black 2-tone.

Here's mine. Wouldn't dream of using a lesser truck!

If you see the brand new driver I accidentally threw off the Gulfport dock into the bay, could you send it back to me?
That was the last time I listened to the golf pro, when he told me to loosen my grip.

I'm not a golfer, but the mental picture of that is quite funny!

at least it's a truck, prolly just needs some torsion bars or hitch adjustment... I've seen folks here pull +25' Airstreams with little sedans
