It is interesting to see GM announce a new diesel almost 2 years before it goes into production, especially with so much detail on the technical features. I am impressed with the 72 degree V and the zero manifold. GM notes that it is designed to accomodate the same space as a small block, I wonder if it going to also be a similar weight?

I may be ready for a new duramax in 6 or 7 years. But it'll have a lot to live up to if it matches the current version.

NO technical details in the article. Looks to me that the engine is child's height and probably well over 1/4 of ton heavy. That will eliminate it from lot of popular vehicles.
Volkswagen mounts 300 HP diesels in compact cars for almost a decade.

It's really about time. I am shocked, though I shouldn't be that GM is releasing the smaller diesel in Europe first.

"The Duramax is package-protected for closed-loop cylinder pressure monitoring, a technology GM will introduce on its new 2.9-L turbodiesel V6 next year in Europe."

So, the 1/4 ton issue is fairly moot IMHO. Of course the 4.5L might not be a solution for say a Malibu, but the 2.9L might do the trick for most of the car lines domestically. The 4.5L I see as a Suburban, Tahoe, Silverado (and their GMC and Caddy similar lines) offering. **Might** even make it's way into the 3/4 ton and larger markets too....but I'm just speculating here.....
