Front axle wheel bend when backing up
I am a new owner of a 28 ft 1994 Excella and am in the process if fixing up. I have only moved it a couple times but yesterday when I took it over to have new tires put on it as I was backing it up into a tight angle my wife noticed the front wheels on the front axle were bending maybe 15 degrees on the stress of the turn. Once we straightened out they went back into alignment. This really freaked us out. What do you think caused this and do I have a real problem on my hands?

Are you sure it just wasn't the tires flexing, giving the appearance of the WHEEL or spindle bending? It does look odd, but normal. I try to reduce the tight maneuvers as much as possible by pulling forward a couple times and reducing the cut angle.

The stress you saw on the tires is said to be the reason that ST rated tires (special trailer) are made. They are supposed to have a sidewall construction that is more robust, which is said to be able to withstand such stresses without damage. So I've been told.

I expect it is tire flex. I have had mine flex enough to scrub the side walls.

I think the Dexter Never Lube axles/spindles actually do bend. I notice it all the time reversing in turns.
They are not damaged or defective. The bend or lean is by design.

Is it just the axle moving in the rubber mounting? I think if spindle metal deflected enough to be visible the metal would be permanently deformed as it would be past its yield point.

I think so.
But it definitely has a lean to it when background no in a curve.
Once the trailer is straight they stand up straight again.

Wheel/Axle bend
I have noticed this on my 76 Overlander as well and try to do the mini-turn idea but some smaller campsites you just have to crank it over.
I don't really know how it works but on my parents Denali 29 ft bumper tow when they back up the wheels on the front axle telescope in and out to reduced wheel/tire stress. It looks scary as hell, but my dad contacted the manufacturer and they said it is designed that way.

very trailer I have had does that. I think what is important is to not leave it parked like that. I always make sure the wheels have made at least one complete rotation while moving straight before I park the trailer just to get rid of that "bind"
