Ford F-150 3.5L V6 Ecoboost

Looking at possibly buying a 25' Flying cloud GVWR 7300 lbs. 2013 Super Crew Cab 4x4. According to Ford the 3.5L with the transmission 3.55 axile ratio is capable of a GCWR of 15,000 lbs. The truck weight with two people and full fuel (36gal)is about 6300 lbs so the way I figure it I should be able to tow up to 8700. Does anyone out there have any real world experience towing a 25' AS with this type vehicle? I have not purchased the AS yet and still researching it. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I bought the same truck in a super cab with 3.73 2011 model with the intention of pulling the same trailer. Like you I haven't purchased the unit yet but would not have bought it if it couldn't handle it. Do a search for the ecoboost engine here and you will find your answer from others who are pulling this same trailer and even the 27'

Good luck

Hi, I bought a similar truck; I think the yellow sticker in the door makes a difference.

Several years ago I would have thought towing with 1/2 ton truck was out of the question. After reading LOTS of discussion on these forums I agree it can be done. We returned in September from the WBCCI Alyeska Caravan and there were four 1/2 ton trucks on that caravan, two F150 Ecoboost and two 1500 Dodge Rams. All 4 performed admirably with no problems; in fact, our travel buddies towed their 30' with an F150 and kept up with us the whole way, only loosing a little ground on the steeper grades. I really like our 2500 Ram diesel with its greater margin of payload, etc., but the 1/2 ton trucks have a lot to offer.

We have real world experience towing a 25' with our Ram 1/2 ton through most of the states throughout the country. We manage our loading within axle and tire ratings, use a ProPride hitch for pleasant towing and absolute stability in all conditions, and the transmission for power up and braking down steep grades.

It's a near perfect match for the task at hand and is a nice driving and riding truck when not hooked up to the Airstream. I would expect at least as good a result with the Ecoboost F-150.

We purchased a new F150 4X4 SuperCab Echoboost, with 3.55, in 2012 for our 08' 25' AS; now we have same truck (60K+ miles) with our new 25' FC and still going strong! No issues. Did discover recently on trip from San Diego to MT over holidays, that by using higher octane fuel (87+), I got improved mileage both when pulling AS and especially when not pulling anything (20-22MPG at 70+MPH). Truck does fine with 25' AS! I will likely get a new one when the 10 speed transmission is out in 2017! For now, couldn't be happier with our choice.

I had a 2013 25' Flying Cloud that I towed with a 2013 F150 Ecoboost with absolutely no problem at all. My only reservation is that I did not have enough payload capacity which was my fault for not doing enough homework on the payload thing. Even still I had no problems at all. I have since bought a 30' Flying Cloud so I am going to upgrade my truck to a 2015 F150 Echoboost only this one will have Max Towing and Max Payload.

I'm shopping for a new tow vehicle and was looking at F350's today. The sales guy highly recommended the new aluminum F150's, claiming 2000 lbs payload.
I figure I need about 1900 lbs (includes 1050lbs tongue weight).
However, when I checked the two door stickers on the well-equipped units they had in stock, I found 1568 lbs and 1583 lbs.
You might check your numbers and comfort level.

They are all different payload ratings as it depends on individual options ordered and packages,Ask for the 2015 Ford towing guide and do your homework. Most salespeople and even the managers ordering the inventory are not well versed on trailer towing requirements.Read the Towing guide carefully as it can seem a little confusing.

I am planning on the purchase of one too. I have a 25' and I can tell you that my current engine is slightly less power/torque than even the 2.7L eco and it does fine. The 3.5L ecoboost super crew 2WD, in its lower final drive 3:15 will even pull a 25 with no issues. It is rated for 10,200 lbs. or 4WD 3:31 and 9900 lbs. It is a bear of an engine. Note how they lower the final on the 3.5 eco engine whereas on the 5.0 the finals don't go that low. It has a lot of torque early on. The payload is going to be around 2000 lbs.

Moflash is absolutely correct. This weekend I went to look and mentioned payload. They did not know what I was talking about with regard to towing.

Hitch

One other thing to be aware of, is the reciever hitch, at least on my 2013 f150 ecoboost, has a rating og 1050lb max for a wd hitch. There is a sticker on the hitch under the bumper with the information. You have to get down and look up to see it. Just throwing it out there.

Final drive ratio? Or axel ratio? 3:15 axel ratio is a very high speed ratio for towing.I would not recommend going that high regardless of torque generated.

Hi from AZ. . . ahh, the subject that won't go away. My '11 FX4 150 Ecohummer pulls my FC 28 just fine, thank you. (Remind me I said that when I get the rig back from Alaska this Summer). . .regards, Craig

Get a 3/4-ton truck and quit worrying about it.

We went with a 2014 Tundra Double Cab. With 5.7L V-8, 6 speed trans, and standard 4.30 gears, Factory tow package. It's rated for 10,500 # towing.

It pulls our Tradewind easily and doesn't even notice our mini "Airstream"

The dark grey Tundra was on our test drive of the Tundra, we bought the white one and added an ARE cap.

The Tundra alone get 16-17 mpg and about 1 mpg less with the mini "Airstream"

The Tradewind is still under construction. It started life at 4350# and when done and loaded should come in around 5000 #.

I would go with the max tow and max payload too. It's nice to have that extra buffer when you need to carry extra passengers or cargo. I seriously thought about a 2015 F150 3.5 ecoboost to tow my 28' slideout but with the 9200 gvwr and 1100# tongue weight and all the gear I carry, I decided on a 2015 GMC 2500 DenaliHD Duramax instead.

You threw me when you asked this question as I have always heard differential and final drive ratio used interchangeably. So I looked it up to learn some more. To answer your question I refer to the final drive rear differential ratio that Ford uses in its listings for towing. The 2015s look to have four offerings ranging from 3.15 to 3.75. The best mpg but weakest for pulling is the 3.15; however, the power of the engine has much to do about that too. The 3.5 Eco does not show a 3.75 I believe, the most powerful but it does not need it yet note that the 5.0 does have the 3.75 option. My current truck has a 3.55 rear differential. That is the ratio offered in the max tow of one of the Eco engines I remember. I will probably go with the 3.15 in the 3.15 Eco for my payload/tow requirements. Your weights may require more.

Axle ratio I found often refers to gearing at the wheels as in the case of 4wd.

Hi, my 2014 F-150 Ecoboost, with Max Tow Package, has a 3:73 electronic locker rear differential . I believe that ratio is not offered for the same in 2015. With the six speed trans a 3:55 should work fine, but I chose to have the 3:73's.
