First time CAT Scale Weigh

Hello everyone,

We just completed a trip to CA from Las Vegas and back this past weekend. All went well. I did complete a CAT scale weigh before departure. Not sure if I am reading the numbers correctly so I would appreciate more experienced help.

2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD.
2018 Airstream International Serenity (28 foot, Rear bedroom).

Tongue Weight using a Sherwood scale = 800 pounds

CAT Scale:
Steer Axel = 4,700 pounds
Drive Axel - 4,860 pounds
Trailer Axel = 6,460 pounds
Gross Weight = 16,020 pounds

Per Silverado Owner's Manual
Silverado GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 10,000 pounds
Silverado FGAWR (Front Gross Axle Weight Rating): 5,200 pounds
Silverado RGAWR (Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating): 5,200

I think I am good with the truck

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) Silverado & Airstream: 16,600 pounds.

Just made it on this one. I was surprised, however.

Airstream Trailer Hitch (Tongue) Maximum Weight: 897 pounds

Okay here too.

Airstream Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) Front & Rear: 3,800 pounds

If this means 3,800 per axel then I should be good here too.

Super appreciate any comments.
Marcus

Two factors: Hitch setting & TV tire pressure.

Needs three passes across scale. Same day, no changes. Passengers aboard.

Top off fuel. Full fresh water & propane (can do these at Flying J, but best to do en route or from home/campground.

1). First pass is with WD tensioned

2). Second pass is with WD slack.

3). Third pass is TV only.

Use the phone app, but go inside to get paper copies afterwards.

Post the (3) Cat Scale tickets and pics of door sticker showing axle limits.

Best to start off at home by having adjusted WDH according to Andrew Thomson published article, “How to Set Your Torsion Bars”. See the Can Am RV website. This will get you close.

The starting point is FALR. Front axle load restoration. Best approximates solo driving responses. Some hitch set tweaks to get there.

This spreads there TW over three points. One may need more (or less) WD to get best feel. Using a Cat Scale makes this easy as it’s a process. Once done, one uses at least an annual check to see that things are the same.

———

Check tire pressure when cold in morning. Both vehicles. Record. Adjust upwards once at truckstop factoring pressure rise since this reading.

TT tires needs to be at sidewall maximum.

TV tire pressure needs to stay inside of door sticker range, but more closely approximate Load & Pressure Table values.

Check again when at truckstop to be able adjust for the “WD tensioned” reading once corrected (if needed) so as to add appropriate amount.

Thanks for posting your truck info. Im just starting to do the cat scale weighing, and im starting to get a little nervous doing the gvwr math.

You posted your 2500 has a gvw of 10000. your scale weight is 9560 on the two axles. Ad in two passengers, a little gear and your hitting your max weight. This is with a 3/4ton truck. Im running into the same thing with my light 69 safari with a tongue weight of 450lbs.

Any one have some input in regards to a pickup trucks gvw. I am using a weight distribution hitch. I havent weight the complete rig yet, only the truck it self so far.

I wouldn't depend on the 'manual'...go by the door jam sticker. 👍
