I believe you have to swap out the head. I did going from 600# to 1000#.

MStephens, my advice to you is to not get an Equalizer for your new trailer but only because you have doubts and doubts can follow you anywhere you go.

I also believe that your hitch was not properly set up. I have a 25FB that I tow with a half ton. 40K miles on the combination without any big issues. Early on I did have some popped rivets and an open door now and then but that was due to the GM tires that came with the trailer. Got a new set and had them balanced and bingo, no more issues.

The ease of hooking and unhooking is a big advantage of my hitch. If you couldn't get the bars to sit on the brackets then something was wrong with the setup.

Good luck with your next trailer/hitch. There are lots to choose from.

The pry bar option was not even possible. The bars hung down well below the angle at which you could attach the pry bar, and/or, the amount of brute strength needed to pry up the bar was way, waaaaay beyond my strength.

Yes, I am quite sure in retrospect that something was deadly wrong even though the combo rode almost level with the TV rear down about 1".

Typically, using the tongue jack, I had to raise the back of the burb to positively scary heights to swing the bar up onto the L-bracket. Anything less, and I tried many adjustments, led to a sagging rear end.

Anyway, that was ancient history. I'm hoping to find a hitch that is easy, clean, and effective if we get a new rig.

Hi

The number of washers in the top bolt on the hitch controls the angle of the bars. If the angle gets crazy, you go to bigger bars or do less WD. My guess is that you had to many washers in and a lot of the weight was pushed to the front axle.

Again, I'm in no way trying to sell anybody on these hitches. They do indeed have some issues. I'm just trying to help sort out what's what in terms of how they do (or don't) work.

If I was starting over, I'd look into the Reese steadi flex.
All the good of the Equalizer without the questionable.
It looks like several hitch makers are jumping on the Equal-I-zer bandwagon.
