Equal-i-zur noise

We have a 2002 Tundra pulling a 1973 23' AS Safari. Have noticed when we were just up to a site; while backing in, we had a lot of "screeching moaning noise". when we left a few days later I did not hook up the sway bars and did not have the problem. Called the company and they said to use a grease compound on the head. Anybody have any other ideas?

Not sure if this link will work but just go to Amazon and search for the above. Takes much of the noise out of the equalizer and of course grease in the appropriate places helps.

When you reverse you need to detach the bars first...

I called the company and they said you do not need to detach them when backing unless the L brackets are very close to the ends, like more than 29" from the head.

Meaning more than 29" of bar between the head and the L brackets.

I assume if you are cutting tight turns you should detach still, does that sound reasonable?

When we pull into a camp site, the wife checks us in and I take the bars off, it is a system that works for us and it means we do not creak and groan all around the camp site!

Is taking off the bars during back up recommended or just suggested? I've backed in four times now with my trailer and the bars were on. While it sounds like zombies coming out of the grave, there didn't seem to be any problem. Am i risking damage of some kind?

On a properly installed Equal-I-zer brand hitch you do not have to pull the bars for any type of backing, no matter the angle. I've had the tow vehicle almost perpendicular to the trailer and the bars are just fine. Yes they squeak and groan but that's their nature. As mefly2 noted they have jackets available to minimize noise. Be careful as to what you lube since the Equal-I-zer is a friction based hitch. Lube incorrectly and you reduce your sway control.
