Electric Jack Bent?

I was towing a short distance and I accidentally put a receiver on my truck with the wrong size ball. The trailer hopped off the hitch and was dragged along the road. Now the electric jack sounds like it's straining and I think it could be bent. I called my local Airstream dealer and they said it has to be replaced, can't straighten it.

Has anyone had a problem with a bent jack and did it require total replacement?

I would think that if there was sufficient force to bend the jack you would want to replace it. Even if, by some chance, you could get the post perfectly straight, what damage have you done to the motor from the shock of impact or trying to move that bent post? I suspect that you will have to replace it sooner or later anyway, so why fight it now? Also, might it be covered by insurance? The longer after the incident you wait the harder it will be to successfully file a claim.

Replace it. Keep the old jack for parts. Problem solved.

This may be a good opportunity to upgrade the size of the jack (e.g., from 3000 lbs to 3500 lbs.) if the current one made any sounds like it was straining, pre-drag event.

When I accidentally bent the jack, I was able to procure a replacement post from the manufacturer, Barker. About $100, as I recall...

Bent/broken Jack Shaft

Mine bent. Upgraded to the 3500, easy installation, reasonably priced, and piece of mind. No regrets replacing.
