I assume that the 1979 Airstream has the round pin plug, if so just replace it with the spade plug which is used now. You may have to move the wires around because I believe that the locations on the plug are different now than in 1979. The Airstream corporate site has a list of old wiring diagrams or use a tester to determine which wire does what.

Yes, I have one for my boat trailer, it has the smaller round connector. Bought it at one of the auto parts stores (Pep Boys, Auto Zone or Checker Auto). I think it cost around $10.

Based on my experiences first with the Overaldner and then win the Minuet, my suggestion would be to obtain a trailer connector end that mates to your tow vehicle and plan on wiring in a new connector. Between age and corrosion the Bargman connectors on both of my coaches needed attention prior to towing home -- not to mention that neither was wired to anything approaching today's Industry Standard for the Bargman connectors.
I did, however, find that the diagrams posted on the Airstream website were quite helpful (the color codes matched those found on my coaches). You can find the diagram for the '79 models at:

The round side (male) has 6 pins and so does the flat side (female), the middle (backup lights) has no connector. I shot 2 pictures of it.....
