Curious what this means. Thanks.

Fuel soaked concrete around pumps at truck stops . . which could be the only place to buy diesel.

Disposable shoe covers and gloves are a handy way to minimize this.

Spilled gasoline evaporates. Spilled diesel leaves an oil messy.

I always liked tracking diesel in on my carpet. It smells GREAT!

Even diesel pumps at gas stations frequently have fuel spilled around them.

Does my intended usage warrant going with diesel?

I own two DMaxes right now. One I drove as my POV for a couple of years. I bought two in the same year because everyone was saying how great they were and I wanted one! ...

Earlier this year I rebuilt the Turbo and changed out the FICM, it runs ok, about 170,000 miles on it.

I had already replaced the head gaskets a couple of years ago.

The other truck has about 70,000 miles on it, it is parked with an exploded piston... (Which destroyed the block).

When they run right, they do pull though.

My V10 Fords have proven much more reliable and cheaper to keep running.

Anyway, my pop bought a 6.0 L diesel the same year, well it made the DMaxes look mighty good by comparison.

He also bought a Dodge Cummins a couple years later, other than a set of failed injectors it has been very reliable.

Just my experiences, your mileage may vary.

Why not just sock a few dollars away in the meantime. Your ideal tow vehicle is probably on the drawing boards or the test track. What I'm reading here is the present crop is loaded with compromises.

2620 payload capacity. We can haul all our stuff and keep it fairly secure with the Leer Topper. Very reliable so far as have all of the gas trucks I have owned.

As for the 2500 vs 3500 question, I preferred the Ram 3500 SRW. It was around $150 more than the 2500, and I much prefer the Hotchkiss leaf spring to the coil springs on the 2500. It rides like a Caddy! Especially compared to our old '01 Dodge 2500 which was set up (and rode like) a farm truck. We went with the Laramie trim level, so the leather seats have bum warmers and tushy coolers built in. I can't speak to the transmission issue inasmuch as I bought the 6 speed stick shift. Nothing beats the sound and feel of a diesel shifting through its gears when *you* want it to! Coupled with the Pickup Pack and bed roller on the 8' box, I may be biased, but based upon its 3700 mile maiden voyage last month with our '14 27FB Classic, I believe I have found the perfect towing machine! ;-)

Adiredneck,

Thanks for the input on suspension differences in Ram 2500 vs 3500. I really appreciate your earlier thoughtful replies as well. It's not something I know much about. I drove both but given the short in town test drive, couldn't tell much difference.

The SRW 3500 with Cummins in very attractive indeed. The 2016 Laramie Limited styling really caught my eye, the unique front grill in particular. Also, 900 ft/lbs in the CTD/AISIN is attractive. If buying, I would opt for ordering with AISIN as well, although I can't say that I need it. Just gives me a warm fuzzy so I will spring for it anyway.

The more I read, the more I'm leaning back towards diesel. Seems some of the issues I read when my search began last month were perhaps overstated. The changes in emissions equipment the last few years adds a variable that I understood poorly.

And lots of the diesel woes I ran across were on forums with younger guys hopping up and tuning trucks. Any time you start tinkering with stuff, reliability, warranty, and such is compromised. I lacked the insight initially to factor this in.

After reading some post on this thread last week, I went back and did an informal comparison. This time I sought out Dodge and Ford related forums and specifically looked at sub forums where folks (younger) were customizing and tuning newer trucks with gas engines.

I saw a very similar pattern to the diesel issues. While varying, the pattern of reliability and function issues was comparable. I initially put judgement on Diesel engines that belonged to shade tree mechanics altering factory performance. Thanks for all the patience and insights here.
