Brake Controller needed for a '66 22' Safari?

Hello All,

I am getting ready to drive to Oaklahoma to bring back a 22' Safari 1966. Do I need a brake controller for it? I have read that I do and that if I don't have one it will employ the magnetic brake system through the brake lights?

Does this sound correct? I am also thinking of the Prodigy brake controller if I do.

Any advise would sure be welcome. Thank you.

The brakes and the brake lights are on different pins on the trailer connector, and just running brake-light current to the braking circuit is likely to get you brief very-jerky brake application followed by a blown fuse in the tow vehicle.

I like having a brake controller, though we towed the Argosy 10 miles or so without one on the day I took possession. For a long, highway run like you describe I'd want trailer brakes, and you're probably legally required to have them in 1 or more states along the route.

I'm happy with the Prodigy P3, personally, though it requires some fiddling to get it right.

Ok I did some research and it looks like the trailer has Kelsey-Hayes brake control on the the trailer and that it has the 6 pin electrical adapter with brake pin. I will go with a Prodigy as well. Thank you very much for the help.
