Well I just spent two days trying to convince myself that an Expedition with the big V8 gasser would do it.

It won't, will it. Not in the mountains all the time. As much as I love Expeditions... no mattery how you squint your eyes or hold your mouth....they're still just a half ton.

IMHO, Nope. 3/4 ton or an Excursion for out west. Did I mention I really love our newsed 3/4 ton in our little mountains in the East? And we are pulling a lot less weight with our older trailer.

I went from an 07 Expedition EL with the 5.4 that was great for everything... but towing the Airstream. The Excursion tows it so much better. Not even comparable.

I don't think you would notice the difference in handleing between an Expedition and an Excursion. You will notice filling up at the pump. Niether is a gas miliage winner. The Excursion with the 3.73 axel is going to give you the best miliage but you will regret it in the mountains. The 7.3L comes with the 3.73 since it makes the torque down low. The V10 with the 4.30 rear end will pull anything that the 7.3 will tow but the RPM's will be higher. The V10 can rev unlike the older push rod V8's.

The handling between the two is MASSIVE and REAL. The later years of the Expedition have independent suspension and coils up front. The turning radius is not much larger than my wife's CLK55. The Excursion, by contrast, is a beast. U turns are often turned into two lefts and a right.

Well, we just arrived back in the USA last night and just put down a deposit on a used F250 in Houston today. Should be able to pick it up on Monday. It's got the the 7.3 with 173k miles on it. Auto trans, 4x4. Red, dammit.

I stopped back by this forum to check and see what kind of goodies you guys recommended for it.

We did look at several Excursions, but didn't have the luxury of waiting around for Mr. Right Excursion. So we went for about the sixth 250 we looked at.

By the way, I was crawling around under it and noticed the tag on the Ford hitch, which I would assume to be the factory tow setup. I was surprised to see that it's only rated to tow 5,000 lbs with a 500 lb tongue weight UNLESS there is a weight distributing hitch on it. I checked the tow hitch on a couple other trucks, same thing. Thought some of you other folks out there shopping for trucks might want to know that. According to Ford, if you buy their truck for a trailer over 5,000 lbs, you have to buy a WD hitch, too. Something to keep in mind, and budget.

Hey Congrats! Care to share the year model?

As far as goodies go, ours came with factory running boards. That's a nice add-on. How does it ride? Ours rides a little bit stiff. One of these days I may try to put some softer shocks on it. Also will add a camper shell on the back to store all our extra junk in for camping.

That hitch sounds like the same one on our F150. Son-in- law has the F250 for a few days, so I can't check it right now.
