Anyone tried the Curt Betterweigh Digital Towing Scale System?

Anyone tried the Curt Betterweigh? https://www.curtmfg.com/betterweigh? Says shipping 12/19, so not sure if they're out yet or how accurate they are. It plugs into the vehicle's VDP for data and then uses your phone.

From the website:
TowSense technology is a digital towing scale system. Using an accelerometer circuit, TowSense measures changes in the velocity and pitch of your vehicle. It uses this data to calculate weights associated with towing and hauling.

Armed with TowSense technology, BetterWeigh wirelessly connects to your Apple or Android phone to display the weight of the vehicle, trailer, cargo / payload, tongue weight, pin weight, weight distribution and trailer brake gain.

Not affiliated in any way. Just like the convenience of something like this vs CAT Scales.

After reading that 30% of the reviews on Amazon are fake and discounting the positive reviews, it looks like there is a high percentage of negative reviews on this device. I have trouble believing that a little box plugged in to the port can be as reliable or accurate as CAT scales. I would trust users here. Anyone have experience with one of these?

Obdii devices are not as accurate as a scale. I have the Haul Gauge and it gives a good approximation of weight. I like the weight distribution function which measures before and after hook up. As others said, look at the haul gauge threads.

I used the Haul Gauge and have found it quite accurate ... They invented this system have no idea how Curtis fits into the mix

UncleBad and drbrick - you have differing opinions on accuracy of these devices. How do you determine that? Are you A/B-ing them against CAT scale tickets? Using some other method? I’m interested but trying to get a sense out of how actual users determine what is/n’t accurate. Thanks!

I have helped many dial in their WD systems and hitch adjustments. I have always done this by going to truck scales. Here in Oregon there are many free scales around agricultural areas. It is my opinion that any device that does not weigh the all the axles including the trailer is not worth the money and cannot give you a true picture of the correct WD adjustment and its effectiveness.

I found the HaulGauge to be within 5% or so of actual CAT scale weights. But having used the HaulGauge I probably wouldn't purchase it now that CAT has an APP so that you don't have to go into the office with the WeighMaster each time you make a pass over the scales. I can make adjustments and multiple passes in about a total of 15 minutes using the App. Cost would be about $20 for 5 passes.

I compared tongue weight from an actual scale to what Haul Gauge reported and it was off 200 one time and 400 another time.

I use it for the WD function which shows the weight shifts that take place when hooking up, meaning it shows me, wherever I am, what the difference if before and after relative to itself.

I recommend the Haul Gauge but you should not expect it to report the same weight a CAT scale would. My point was that scales will always be more accurate. Also, Haul Gauge goes anywhere with me, CAT scales are just not that portable. ;-)

I hope this helps.

Yes that helps. Thanks.
And ghaynes - the CAT app is GREAT! Very easy to do a 3-weight series.

What vehicle are you using HG with? Since it uses data from the vehicle in a unique way, I could theoretically see variances in accuracy from brand to brand depending on the OBD setup they use.

I have a 2012 F250....

UncleBad I have a 2019 Ram Longhorn Megacab Diesel. I did find that the semiautomated setup routine of the HaulGauge was not accurate. I think that with the newness of the truck (May 2019, new model year) that the VIN lookup wasn't very accurate on data. Once I did the more manual, multiple stop and go recordings it was pretty close to the scales. Good enough for close enough but the scales will always be #1.

I fail to see the benefit of inaccurate weigh system. Seems like just another app or gadget for entertainment.
The only time I need to scale my rig is at time of initial set up or when making a change in equipment or substantial change in loading additional gear. I have not needed to scale my unit the last two years and should I need to I will go to a cat scale.

I understand that. To each his own.

The Haul Gauge does give me a sense of knowing that I am in the ballpark when hooking up our AS for tow. You can actually “see” the weight being distributed during the process.

It also makes me look smarter and better looking and confident. That is hard to do I can tell you. [emoji851]AND I am gadget nut, much to the disdain of my DW.

Is Betterweigh the same app as Haul Gauge? You screen shots of the Betterweigh app look the same as the Haul Gauge app.
