Anybody use a Hitch Grip?

I'm thinking of ordering a Hitch Grip to aid me in removing the hitch at campsites when stopping for a couple of days in one place. I hate to waste money buying stuff unless it really is helpful. It seems this tool would make things a little easier. I'd be interested in hearing what you think about this idea. Helpful item, or just another gizmo? Anyone use one?

For my ProPride stinger, I just grab with a pair of sturdy gloves and set it in a corner of the garage.

Wonder if it would work on Airsafe hitch? About 80 pounds and top heavy.

I made a simple one for handling the Hensley stinger in and out.

It is just a piece of 2"x2" wood maybe a foot long with a hole drilled through each end.

A short loop of rope hangs from the two holes. When i carry the stinger around one loop is over each and and the wooden bar becomes a carrying handle.

In one of the loops I have a snap connector thing just to make it easy to unhook that loop and remove the gadget once the stinger is into the truck receiver.

Probably not really necessary but cost me nothing and makes handling the stinger cleaner and easier. I do have some spinal osteoarthritis brought on by a fracture verterbrae about five years ago, so I think it is wise for me to use aids like this.

Very easy to find the balance point for lifting the stinger and that helps.

I use an Equalizer hitch and I love using the Hitch Grip! I was quite skeptical of another gadget but an older friend had one and recommended it to me. I used to get back aches removing the hitch (maybe because I had to bend down more than when using the Hitch Grip....not sure) and now I don't.

Just for grins I picked one up for $5 at the International. I have to use it backwards as designed because the stringer gets in the way. It works but not as well as used properly I suspect.

I use a Hitchgrip on my Equalizer head with my 2 1/2" shank for my Ram 2500. Since the shank is so heavy I use it this way. To make it easier I purchase a dolly with wheels from Harbour Freight so I can wheel it up to the truck then only have to lift a short distance.

I have an Airsafe, and have used it for the past 7 years. I tried a Hitch Grip, and it just doesn't work well. So, I built a small dolly, and that works just fine. Put it under the Airsafe when I'm removing it from the receiver, and wheel it into the garage. Make it a lot easier for this old geezer...

I also built a dolly to wheel my hitch head around. 4 wheels from HF and scrap wood. It has a fixture that the hitch head sits upright in. I use a HF plastic dolly to sit my Yamaha 2000 on to move it around. I think I paid more for the individual wheels than the dolly that I bought on sale minus 20% off.

If you did order it, DO NOT use it with a REESE 'multi-ball' hitch!

The ball will rotate, the stinger assy. will fall off, and JUST miss your toes, if lucky.
I used mine for quite a while, but just found it easier to just grab the stinger with a pair of old gloves, and shove it in the pipe.
Haven't used it for about a year now.

I made a hitch handle many years ago with a loop of old garage door cable threaded through the top unused hole of the hitch riser and through a piece of scrap 1/2 PVC pipe.

Splice the garage door cable by overlapping the ends a few inches and wrapping tightly with bailer wire. Slip the splice around into the PVC pipe handle to prevent the sharp steel cable ends from being a hazard.

It was free and has lasted about 20 years.

Got one last year. Makes taking out and re-installing the Husky Centerline hitch head a lot easier. Keeps the grease off the jeans. I take an old rag and wipe the grease off after each use. Chris

My wife got me one last year after I hurt my back taking the hitch out on a trip in Mississippi. Works great , less stress on my back. Easy to lift hitch and store on the A frame when unhooked at campground. I show anyone who talks about trouble of removing the hitch.
