Any Xterra folks out there?

I have read the threads about towing with an FJ Cruiser, and had thought that a tan FJ would be a great tow for my 6 Meter Minuet. The Minuet weighs about 2,600 lb loaded to travel and the FJ has a tow rating of 5,000 lbs.

While looking at options I have noticed the Xterra is equally capable (on paper) to the FJ. Specs for both are very close. Also, they seem to have better rear visability and are more dog friendly with larger windows in the rear.

Xterras also seem to be more available and a little less expensive.

Anyone out there in "small tow vehicle land" use an Xterra and where does it excell or fall short.

Thanks!

You might inquire about the Pathfinder and Frontier as well-
From the 2005 model year they have the same components, and the Pathfinder had a 5.6 liter V8 option in some model years.
From 2000-2004 the XTerra, Pathfinder, and Frontier were similarly capable.
The Pathfinder was a little bit more luxurious, but the XTerra and Frontier were a little sturdier.

Hmmmm, are you sure about that V8 in the Pathfinder ? What year or years ?
As far as I know, they were all V6. The Pathy is also short wheelbase, compared to the Frontier. The older Pathfinders were 112" if I remember, and I think the current version, with the 3.5L V6 are 114".
Frontier I think is 127" WB.

Armada had/has the 5.6 V8 because it's based on the Titan chassis.

Google it, my brother- Google it-
Yes, I am absolutely positive about the Nissan Pathfinder having the 5.6 liter V8. I just googled it to determine years. I saw a lot of 2012's and a couple of 2008's- so assuming they made them at least from 2008-2012.
Why not? They already had the motor for the Titan/Armada/QX56 and whatever the big V8 Infiniti sedan is called...M? Q? maybe both?
I have actually seenn some around here from time to time.
I still own a 1999 Pathfinder with the 3.3 liter V6 (see signature). I wouldn't pull more than a golf cart trailer with it...
During a similar time period there were also some 4.7 liter V8 Toyota 4Runners and 5.3 liter V8 Chevy Trailblazers and GMC Envoys and 5.7 liter V8 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 5.0 liter V8 Land Rover Discovery's...
The XTerra and Pathfinder from 2005 till now should be the same wheelbase- they (and the Frontier) are basically the same chassis. They are shorter than a Frontier. They are as long as a regular cab Frontier would be if they still made such a thing. Now Frontiers only come in King Cab and Crew Cab.

They have a simple V8 insignia on each fender and the back hatch.
There is no 5.6 badging, but that's what it is.

Had an Xterra and was not comfortable towing with it. It was as if was just working to hard to tow my little trailer.

Thanks for the replys. AWCHIEF, my Minuet is probably very similar in weight and size to your trailer so it is good info to know you weren't comfortable with an Xterra. Currently using an old Lincoln Navigator which is overkill, but it's paid for. The dogs like the extra room as well. Will probably talk myself in to keeping the Lincoln, just trying to get away from the 10 mpg towing down the road (not much better solo!).

Keep using the Navigator. I knew a guy who towed a 34' with a Navigator.

Towed our 17' Casita nicely with an Xterra V-6. Towed our latest, the 20' FC to Seattle from Phoenix last spring with same. No probs but it felt weak on grades. Upgraded to a 2013 F-150 5.0L V8 recently to tow the AS. Enjoyed the Xterra. Much better rear visibility then the FJ..why I steered away from FJ early on (even a salesman admitted the visibilty was weak). Jeff
