A ponder - Would Have,Could Have ,Should Have

Ya know you stare at that cool accessory and say to yourself I’ll get it later I’ll find it cheaper etc.

Well that would be me at Jackson Center looking at the display for the Rock Tamers both on the display and on several FORD F-250 Tow Vehicles.

We just returned from a 6000 mile Trip and for all you guys wanting a Ford F-250 SuperDuty let me warn ya they are one NASTY stone throwing Airstream denting machine.

Probably would not toss a pebble at a utility trailer with a 13,000 pound dozer on it , But hitch up a nice shiny Aluminum Airstream behind it and it’s a stone slinging machine.

Even with the new super Weather Tech mud guards it dented my front storage locker and just peppered the heck outta my stone shields.

Of course I’m sure if I bought the lower to the ground Silverado maybe not so much damage

And no I was not running on dirt or back roads. Must have been camp ground gravel in the tires.

So I should have bought them guards! Or the Chevy.

Or......what tires are you running that grab rocks? I put new tires on the truck and they throw rocks from my lane super bad. And it is my lane so my bad rocks.
So, if your point is get Rock Tamers then I agree with you.

Or run your tires thin and they don't pick up rocks?.......unfortunately where I am at looking at the cost of new treads. But I don't throw stones anymore!!!???

I absolutely LOVE my RockTammers. I even have the new LED lights for them. My Toyo AT tires are rock chuckers.

I put the Michelin Defender LTX on my truck that get such good review around here and those things are terrible when it comes to picking up stones.

Don't have "rock tammers" per se but would not tow without rock guards/mud flaps (whatever) - now if we do Alaska we might consider an ungrade

Because I have towed for many miles on Canadian forestry roads my F150 with mud guards have flung quite a few rocks at the rock guards on my AS. I view them as badges of honor...

I've traveled to Alaska and back and 9 more seasons and have not put one dent in my trailer using the Rock Tamers. As the ad use to say, "Don't leave home without them. Mud flaps alone won't do it.

Our first road trip with the new AS was a circular route through central ID, using paved secondary highways...except for a couple road construction areas having gravel surface/pilot cars. When we returned home, I was like you - Oh man, look at all the small dents in the AS protector panels. Damn.

So we bought the Rock Tamers and use them. Can't tell if there are any new dents, amongst all the original trip dents, but I do think they are the best. One issue I had with them is there are two bolts to secure it to the receiver tube. I kept finding that they were not sufficient to maintain a firm attachment- typically loosened and eventually rubbed chrome off the bumper. I decided to drill a 5/16" diameter hole in the top of the cast aluminum collar and tap for a bolt and lock nut. This supplemented the two bolts/lock nuts that kept loosening. Now the Tamers do not wiggle loose and won't damage the bumpers. "Rock" solid.

Me too!
I never drive gravel roads and yet find a hundred stones stuck in the deep tread. I guess from my driveway and campgrounds.

Hi

Indeed I looked at the RockTammer display at JC not on one visit but on *two* visits. Each time the little voice said "you need those". In addition, on the first visit, a forum member in the waiting room was getting a set and pointed out the "you need these".

So far no horrible rock damage to the trailer. The windshield on the F-250 now needs a replacement though .....

Yes the the RockTammers are on the Christmas list (unless this gets me excited enough to drive by JC and pick up a set later this week ....) ... hmmm.... wonder if they always have them in stock ? ... hmmm ...

I would also recommend Duraflaps made in Oregon. I had the Rock Tamers on a previous Airstream and they worked fine. But I got tired of the extra weight on the hitch and changed to the Duraflaps. I did get the extra long model, I think. They are fit for each truck manufacturer. Three years later, over many gravel roads in Colorado and other states, no rock dents anywhere.

For a mere $50 from the Airstream store you can buy the “Airstream” plates that directly replace the “Rock Tamer” plates on the flaps

Did the same thing when picking up our new trailer in Boise. Ended up on 20 miles of fresh chip seal and even with the rock tamers on, got peppered with small dings between the AS rock panels and propane cover.

Rock tamers will help, but not totally rock proof!

Yes, but if you pay $270 for Rock Tamers on Amazon + $50 Airstream plates instead of just buying the branded ones from the AS store for $295, you lose $25!

Looks like the price is the same everywhere. I looked at 30 sellers and all were $270.
