7-pin with rock guard

so im installing a new 7-pin female part on to my 1978 safari. The previous owner didn't have one installed. There is a whole where it should be, but He has rock guards over it looks like the 7-pin wouldn't fit under the rock guard once installed. So my question is where do people with rock guards usually instal their 7-pin or is there a way to make it fit?

When I installed the segment protectors on the '78 Sovereign I cut a square out over the connector.
