'63 globetrotter and '04 4runner, well matched?

hi guys,

i am getting a 63 gt and needed something to pull it with. i bought a 2004 4runner 4x4 4.0 l v6. rated to tow 5000#. the gt, which is stock, weighs in at 2700 or so lbs. from what little i know of towing, which is a very little, i thought that this would work ok. i am not a speed demon, even less so, my copilot, my wife. we would eventually like to take this rig from california to the east coast. do you guys think we will make it? looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

thanks in advance,

paul

Post #13 here may be of interest.... http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...ion-42259.html

If you use this vehicle one would suspect special attention would be required with regards to set up, to optimize stability.

from what i have been reading it sounds like i should use a weight distributing anti sway hitch set up, like the equalizer hitch. what else do you think i should do? i want to give myself the greatest safety margin. the posts i have read about being sucked into semi's have me a little concerned.

Hello Airstreamers

I bought a new 19 foot bambi and I have a 2004 Toyota 4runner with 4.7 liter v-8 (220HP) with factory tow package. I have also bought the class 5, Airsafe hitch receiver. This hitch is a little heavyer than what I need and someone is trying is sell me weight distribution bars and sway control system.

My question is as follows: Can I purchase Reese weight distribution bars only or do I need a complete anti-sway system with the AirSafe hitch receiver?

airward,

I'm certainly no expert on the Airsafe hitch, but from what I've seen of them, you will need the complete WD hitch system, minus the draw bar, assuming your Airsafe hitch is the model that will accept, or bolt up to the head of the Reese hitch.

Airsafe hitch

Thanks Steve,

I will buy a standard Reese hitch with weight distribution bars (650 LB) which is cheaper than buying just the parts I need to go with the Airsafe hitch.

When my Airsafe hitch shows up I will swap out the solid shaft for the Airsafe.
