The RAM diesel is not new AFAIK, it is still the VM 3.0 diesel, another V6, but press accounts are that it won't be called an Ecodiesel any longer.

I do like the idea of an inline 6, for serviceability and balance, but it is surprising that they went that way with the GM engine given packaging constraints.
Well, think about it, the block and head should be roughly the length of the old 235 or 250 ci gassers that were in trucks for many years. Of course they will be a lot of plumbing, but the 6.6 fits i n the same doghouse.

Agreed. Just that being two cylinders longer than the V8, and taller, it is tougher to fit it in. Sure, it fits in a 1500 pickup, but wouldn’t they have considered other candidate vehicles? Perhaps the SUVs will get 4 or 5 cylinder variants of this new engine.

Wasn’t the Vortec 4200 sunset because it didn’t fit in anything except the GMT360 SUV it was then offered in?

The full size suvs have the same size doghouse too. The 4200 was long in the tooth. Wouldn't meet next cafe and emissions standards. It was a 6 cyl, 5 cyl, and 4cyl family, so there was a variant for a lot of applications.

Not, to step on your cow paddy, HP means nothing to me. The torque/grunt is what I am interested in.

Best regards and safe travels

Well, hp has its place in engine performance, but yes, torque provides acceleration and hill climbing. Careful, Countryboy is poking a stick at us. Jus sayin.

That said, my 6.2 does everything well and is 90% of a duramax in everyday use. Most impressive gas tow with a 9k trailer I have ever experienced. Yes, I have towed with duramax.

Oh my God, they are different units of measurement. You need enough power to pull a weight up an incline.

This is like saying "I don't want volts, give me amps".

Moving the weight up the incline is doing work. Doing work over a specific time interval is power.

So, in your example, you need enough power to pull a weight up an incline at a given speed.

Brought this up with the engineers at work a couple days ago and I think the argument is still going on lol. But to paraphrase one guy, "yeah but lots of torque makes it more fun". That's probably why I can be in a deep conversation with my wife at the campground when a diesel rolls by, and I just stop talking. She just rolls her eyes and says, "yes, it's a diesel."

Thanks to the OP for providing the link to very useful information about the Silverado. I'm a little late to the discussion but found the press release and other information very helpful. We're currently considering a 2019 Silverado or Sierra and particularly want the 6.2L gasoline engine and the Max Trailering Package.

We've been following another thread specifically related to the Max Trailering Package and learned quite a bit with those comments and bits of real-world experience.

I also have questions and concerns about the side-view mirrors on the 2019 Silverado and Sierra. If you have experience with the 2019 truck or otherwise have knowledge about the side-view mirrors please refer to the thread found HERE.

Thanks

Please correct me if my info is wrong, but I thought Ford had issues with Navistar in their trucks which is why they designed and started building their own engines?

You are correct as to ford and navistar eng. they were complete junk w/many prob. I was surprised to see in another post some thing about gm & navistar eng. I don't like diesel in pu but duramax seems okay.

Somewhat related...we upgraded 2010 Tahoe LTZ to 2018 Tahoe RST to get the 6.2L...20% increase in mpg to about 12.1 round trip KS to WY in summer heat (greater range for same fuel cap too); 10 speed great driving experience with new suspension w/auto leveling...and significant more hp and torque....for pulling our 2017FC23FB....for us a good fit. ... and fits in garage too.
