2015 F250 w. 6.7 Diesel

OK gang... I just bought a 2015 F250 w. 6.7 Diesel. Taking our first trip with our 27 ft. FC in a week. With the undersized fuel tank at 26 gallons, how many miles are you fellow 2015 F250 Diesel people getting on a full tank???

We have the long bed so we have a 37 gallon tank and routinely go well over 350 miles between fill ups; but we get about 12 mpg towing so once your engine is broken in a bit (after about 10,000 miles) you can probably plan on about 250 to 275 miles between fill ups (allowing for a margin of safety.)

We have a 2015 F350 with same sized tank. We installed a replacement 50 gallon tank. used to stop about every 250 miles for fuel as we average 13.8MPG. Now we can run between 500 and 650 miles between fill ups. The advantage is we can select our fuel, be careful on price and avoid the mom and pop stations that are often tough to get into and out of.

Enjoy your trip.

I also replaced my 26 gallon with the Titan 50 gallon tank, had the Ford Dealer do it.

MPG with 6.7 engine

I have a 2014 F350 (3.55 rear end) with same engine, I get 12.5 MPG, however, when in the Mtns, with a grade, I get around 9 MPG. On a level rd I get 13.5+, and w/o the trailer, I am getting 19.5. I pull a 30" FC. Love the truck... remember, you have to break in the engine, took around 5k+...
Good luck and enjoy the truck, I sure do...

I had a 26gal F-250 6.7L. First of all doesn't it tick you off Ford does something like this!

I pulled an AS about 5,500lbs. 70 mph about 11.5mpg. You will be hunting for fuel every 200 miles to keep enough reserve not to run out of fuel. Keep a 5 gal. spare with you if traveling out West. If you have never owned a diesel before, do NOT run it out of fuel. It is not like a gas engine where you just fill it up and off you go. You run out of diesel and it is going to be towed to have the fuel system primed. Good luck and recommend getting and aftermarket tank in short order.

Man......I sure glad I didn't trade my 2000 Dodge with the 5.9 on a new Ford like I was going to do last week. I get 17.6 mpg pulling my 23FB that weighs 6000# loaded, I get 20 - 21 not pulling.

Ford does it for weight control and bed capacity as explained to me by the Ford dealer who installed my Titan tank; and Firedog1's tank as he told me about this particular dealer. They did a terrific job by the way, three hours start to finish - now about 900 range without the AS behind us.

Had a Transfer Flow 45 gallon installed in my 2006 Chevy diesel and do not regret the cost for one minute. It has made a world of difference in peace of mind not having to plan a trip on where the next diesel filling station is. Allow you to get off the beaten path a lot more and actually enjoy the Airstream journey.

I'm really happy with my F350/6.7. It's smooth, powerful, quiet and very comfortable. Mileage is a bit less than my F250/7.3, but then it has a lot of pollution control that the F250 doesn't have.

I'm seeing similar results to others in the thread. It does seem to be getting better as I get more miles on the truck. We're betting close to 8,000 on her (Big Ruby) now.

Butch Dowse

We have a '12 250 with 6.7, about 34,000 miles pulling a 27' FB.
Mileage is about the same as discussed in the thread.
At my age, smaller tank and overactive bladder works out about right.
It was my understanding that Ford lopped off about 5 gallons from the original fuel tank to add the DEF tank. I carry an extra 5 gallons as we travel the western states a lot. Thinking about striking out for Alaska and if we do, will strongly consider installing a larger fuel tank.
As previously stated, don't run out of fuel and don't try to cheat the DEF system and don't trust every green handle you see, some are gasoline.
Happy Truckin' you're gonna love the truck.

I second BDowse comment on DEF, don't try to cheat it. My F-250 6.7L DEF gauge had two modes, Full and less than half full. Again, another 'what are you thinking Ford?'. I recently sold the F-250 with 150,000 miles (mine was a lemon but that is a different story). Do not run out of DEF. And expect to use almost twice as much pulling a load. I could usually go 5,000-5,500 miles, unloaded, before I would get the first 800 mile DEF warning. I pull every summer in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming (lots of mountains). My DEF tank before warning usually was about 3,500 miles. I always tried to keep it toped off as soon as the indicator said less than half full. And always carry a spare 2.5 gal just in case.

A FYI: If you do run out of DEF do NOT shut your engine off till you get more. If you run out the engine will limit your speed you can go. If you shut it off and then try to go again it will limit your speed it becomes a non functional rig. This may have changed in the 2nd gen 6.7L. Also, if you have a DEF pump failure (I have had 2 of these), or the vent line check valve to the DEF tank becomes inoperable (same symptom of a failed DEF pump) then your truck will not punish you as if you cheated the DEF level and ran out of DEF. It can tell the difference but it will give a you warning light and punish you a little bit. Your fuel mileage will get higher and you will notice about a 20-25% loss in power but still maintain a high way speed. I have had to drive pulling twice in this mode in the last 4 years out West. Try to find a dealer who has a $1,200 replacement in stock out West, not going to happen.

Enjoy your torque, you will love it. Just keep the oil, fuel filters and air filters super clean and try everything possible to stay away from bio diesel. In 150,000mi I went through two EGRs because of that stuff. It is like cholesterol to your artieries and almost as fatal.

Towing with a Ford 250

I want to say that we too get the range of mpg that you report with our Ford 250/6.7L TD. I admit that I check mpg rarely as "it is what it is," and we can generally not be concerned about the costs of fuel. We have a 2011 model which finally passed 23,000 miles this month. Once measured a bit ago we were getting @ 19 mpg driving mostly "around town." Towing our 23'Internationl Serenity at moderate speeds, 60mph, fuel consumption didn't seem materially different from non-towing use. However, driving at 70mph made a noticeable difference. Actual numbers are unknown.

These comments have suggested we monitor fuel consumption more and carefully. This month we will camp a couple times. I will check the fuel usage and report.

Cheers to all and thanks for great comments.

2013 F250 6.7L, crew cab, short bed pulling 2013 International 25FB. Consistently average 12.5 mpg when towing at posted speed limit. Pretty much stay at 70mph on the interstate even if posted higher. We live at 7000' elevation so its always long climb coming home no matter which direction we are coming from. Most of our trips are in the mountain west, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona - 12.5 mpg has been the average.

I have learned to use Gas Buddy to plan fuel stops and then go to Google earth to look at each station to see how big the fueling area is and which side of the road they are on. The better half can usually only handle about 250 miles before requiring a break so stopping every 3 or 4 hours isn't really an issue for us, but finding a fuel stop on the back roads that doesn't require contortionist moves with the Airstream in tow can be a challenge.

Having said all of that, I would like the peace of mind a larger tank would provide. I have cap on the bed and a bed slide, which I love, so no room in the bed. Does the Titan 50 gal fit under the truck or in the bed?

Titan fits under the truck. It replaces the existing fuel tank. Here's a link to the Titan website to the page with the Chevy and Ford tanks:

Titan Fuel Tanks Website

Price of the tank ordered from Titan is noted on the web page. My Ford dealer quoted me a price of $1980 plus tax installed on my 2011 F250 Lariat 4X4 diesel short bed, crew cab.

Here is a link to an installation video:

Perfect, thank you Chuck. I do have the FX4 package so this will work. Hopefully my Ford dealer can install as I don't want to do anything that would void the warranty.
