I have never had it out West but none of the eastern mountains have been a problem. I always use tow-haul and it does not want to cylinder deactivate except on downhill stretches. I always tow fully loaded. Yes, my payload is limited but we do not haul around a bunch of stuff so it works for me. And has been said many times, the half ton is much more comfortable as a daily driver when the trailer is not attached, which is most of the time. With the trailer I normally average 13-14 mpg.

Check and stay withing the manufacturer's load ratings and you'll be fine. If you want to be "boy racer", then go ahead, but when a poster just wants to know if their rig is safe and effective, the specs tell all the story that needs to be said.
