X5 TV Purchase Eminent Question

I am about to order a 2014 X5 35D, with air suspension (among other options). I would be replacing a 2011 Toyota Sequoia TV, which has done an excellent job of towing my 2011 International 25FB the last three years. The reason for changing vehicles is two fold: this is my wife's primary vehicle and she is looking for something smaller than the Sequoia, and, the mileage on the Sequoia, towing the AS, ranges in the 10mpg range. Better mileage would be expected from the X5 Diesel. Will I be disappointed in the performance of the X5 vs the Sequoia when pulling my AS?

Diesel does better in economy numbers but some of this is lost to higher cost of diesel fuel, but generally if trading for fuel economy to an expensive vehicle you may lose money. The diesel will have plenty of power for the Airstream. Toyota reliability is among the best where BMW can be spotty. Probably comes down to an easier vehicle to drive which may be worth it to the wife.

You'll be greatly pleased with the X5 (see my avatar) diesel. I would advise you to install the OEM receiver and if you don't mind a little stiffer ride get the 2014 equivalent of my 2001's "Sport Package" which included low profile tires which minimize side wall flex. If you want more details regarding my assembly do a search on "withidl".

I have been thinking about getting a X5 also. But I'm leaning for a used one with the 3.0 6 cly. My wife has a 530xi and it is joy to drive. I think you love the BMW over Toyota.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am very familiar with the BMW product line (first purchase was a 2002 in 1972 and currently have a 550iGT), and I have no hesitation regarding the reliability. Because the X5 is only rated for 6000#, and the Sequoia for 7000#, my hesitancy was based on that rating. We don't put a lot of miles on the AS, but do plan a WI--BC-LAX-WI, trip this year. I appreciate all the responses!
