Sandlapper AKA Leake's Antiques

I don't think John will mind and he might not want to talk proud, he's a simple kinda folk in a great way. I got a chance to get a sneak peak at his family business in York SC and I think some alien from the planet Walnut taught John and Family about proper wood useage.

Take a minute and tour his skills.

Woodworking has been a hobby of mine since high school. When everyone else was making bird houses, I made a coffee table.
I made all the cabinets for my Argosy 28 (pictures here on the forums).
One of my latest projects was the bed I made for my daughter and son-in-law as a wedding gift.

Not really into paddling or fishing, just enjoy the heck out of building these, esp the kayak, a kit from Chesapeake Light Craft known as the Wood Duck 12.
Won't be the last CLC I build...the results are stunning if you take your time in the finishing.

Spent the better part of last fall building "The Rocket Shop".

This shop is used to construct everything from the smallest models to large displays and cabinets.

Beautiful, beautiful work, folks.

There is something so warm and fundamental about items made from wood.

Makes me happy just to look at them.

Maggie,

Bet if you follow John home from Alumalina he'll give you the tour and a handful of sawdust as a souvenir.

This is a great thread - and I'm sure gonna be one of those ones that stays active for years.

Looking at the pictures already submitted it's pretty obvious there are a lot of talented folks on this forum - and some great looking shops!

Through most of my career my own "Stress Management Activity" was crafting reproductions of antique wall and mantel clocks. I'm kinda weirdly proud to say that at least a couple of them have made it into a family will. Post retirement I kinda shifted gears (clocks are damn expensive to make) and have been playing with the scrollsaw - still very relaxing - and a heck of a lot cheaper hobby!

The other thing I'm kinda liking about the scrollsaw is that I think I can take it on holiday - and enjoy it and the Airstream at the same time!

My shop is a modest one - typical of many - a garage shop that has too little space and too much stuff - but it has the tools I need and is a great place to spend my winter afternoons.

The two wall clocks are the last two wall clocks I've made. The scrollsaw pieces have been made in the last two years.

I was actually thinking exactly along those lines.

Handmade wooden items evoke very loving memories of my Danish grandfather, who was a carpenter and made a sideboard and hutch that I have....that go with a claw leg table and china cabinet they purchased.

Woodworkers must be basically good people, don'tcha think? The kind of folks you're just glad to know and have in your life.

Beautiful!

Fortunately there are still a few people that can appreciate things like this, versus the "got to have it now for the cheapest price types"

I took a cabinet making course from a guy up in the Jamestown, NC area. He was under contract to build two households worth of custom furniture, figured it would keep him in business for the next 3-5 years at that time. One was all Shaker style/inspired in cherry. The other household was using maple/walnut and most of the designs looked like arts and craft style to me.

Can't wait to get my shop up and going again, need something to keep me out of bars and off of street corners when I retire.

Below are some of my projcts, The first picture is of a hall table that I made from the Honey Locast tree that used to reside in my front yard. The National Power Grid folks decided that it might take of like an ICBM and hit a power line accross the street and cut it down. I had the trunk milled into lumber.

The shop is kida messy right now as I am finishing the other half of the basement and every thing is in my workshop right now.
