Sarah

And last, but not least, there was Sarah. We adopted her when she was just 3 years ago. She succumbed to bladder cancer two years later...

We have 3 female dogs (I am the only guy in the rig) All of them were looking for a home. Bandit was in the pound on death row, she is now 13 years old 15 pounds and the boss. Smokie is 2 and was from a breader who had a breading mistake (fence was too short). Gracie is a 2 year old yellow lab who got too big for the family who had her. Bandit is not in the photo because at 13 she decides when she gets her picture taken.

Got these two, who go with us in the Argosy, from their breeder; however, they were rescued by her from an extremely bad home. The people had purchased them and then they decided the "kids" didn't like them and they were housed in a dark garage, covered with fleas and malnourished.

We trapped them

We have four cats, all former ferals that we trapped (or were trapped by a cat rescue group). Buddy and Bonnie have become true pets, Elly is thinking about it and Misty after 3+ years of indoor living still thinks I have weapons of mass destruction which I'd use on her if she let her guard down even for one minute.

Here's a photo of Buddy and Bonnie from last winter assisting me in my home office.

Where did you get your travel companion?

My two Chihuahuas were purchased from a breeder, and it was something of a surprise when the breeders name was revealed (my first contact was via a blind advertisement in the Quad City Times). It turned out that the breeder's husband is a distant cousin of Wally Byam's -- the breeder's business name was Byam's Kennel.

Precious is now nearly four years old and weighs just a little over 3.5 pounds while her half-brother Little Bear (his color and markings remind me of the Bear-Brand Hosiery Co trademark bear) is a little over 7.5 pounds. I don't have current photos of them as they are staying with my father while my moving process is completed.

We found Bokeh, the silver-gray domestic longhair, sick and dehydrated, in our neighbor's overgrown backyard in 2001. Rollei, the smartest orange tabby in the world, strolled into our house as a kitten late in 2003 and has been with us ever since. My husband rescued Stutz, allegedly a Pembroke Welsh Corgi (but I'm sure there was a JRT somewhere in his past) from a U.S. military-run animal shelter in Germany in 2004. We hit the road full-timing this past April. Life is never dull!

Kerry Blues

We have two Kerry Blues named Callahan & Mulligan and they are obviously
the smartest dogs in the world because as terriers they know they don't
have to do anything unless they want to or if it pleases their fancy . What
fun they are and great pals to travel with and the nice thing, they do not
shed. They do collect snow when we take them skate skiing but all the other
dogs they meet on the trail makes up for the snow. They must have played
with 30 other dogs yesterday and they were "Pooped" out when they got
home. Happy Trails, John & Betty

Our local shelter had just the perfect dog for us. When Spot died I knew he would be difficult to replace and I resisted even looking. Then my son had us take care of his English Bull Dog, that he rescued from a shelter. What a treat with a very strange dog. If you have never met an English Bull Dog, they are unique to say the least. I caught the bug and started looking. When we visited a shelter where the people knew us a vet took us in back to show us a dog she had found wandering in a swamp. He was carrying his fetch toy and refused to give it up. He is a Field Springer Spaniel who, we have learned, is frightened of guns. A perfect match for a pacifist like me. He is kind, gentle, well behaved, and best of all goofy! I am just thrilled to once again have a companion to fill my days with and look forward to travelling with him. I named him Cromwell, which does not fit the pacifist side of his personality but is a topic for another story.

Sam and Greta are both rescues from the animal shelter, Sam from a rural MO shelter and Greta from an IA shelter. The MO shelter tried to put Sam down a couple of times but couldn't bring themselves to do it; luckily, we adopted him the day before the regional animal control officer was scheduled to put him down. Greta had a litter of 12 puppies at the shelter before we adopted her, and they are both wonderful, wonderful dogs. It's hard to beat the love and devotion of a shelter or rescued dog.
