I had this over at the picture site, but didn't attach it with my original post. I really like this truck! The 454 Vortec has lots of torque, and lets me pull the AS at whatever speed I desire on the interstates. It was the last "Classic" body style they had on the lot in August of 2000. I had a 3500 Single Cab Dually on order with the Duramax and ZF 6 speed, but canceled the order when I saw this truck. So far, no regrets at 25,000 miles.

What's your tow vehicle's rating?

Greetings Pick!

I have basically the same GMC underpinngs in my '99 GMC K2500 Suburban that was special ordered to my specificatgions by Pioneer Motors in Lancaster, Wisconsin. It will be turning 100,000 miles by the end of this month. There has only been one recurring problem with my rig, and it has been with the automatic four-wheel-drive transfer case selector module - - it failed consistently at 12,000 mile intervals until GM released a new, improved module in 2001 that was installed in my rig at 78,000 miles.

My Suburban appears in the photo below:



I fully expect this Suburban to go at least 350,000 miles and at least another decade of operation.

I have been towing large sailboats prior to my newly purchased Airstream. The boat and trailer combination scaled at 8900#. I have been using an old 1982 20series Suburban. It has a 454 with TH-400, factory duals, and 4.10 rear. I was getting milage around 9 to 9.5 towing as the truck was originally built. 230 HP from 454 CI is a sorry sight.

I have changed several items on the engine in an attempt to raise the torque and HP of the engine, specifically older, larger oval port heads with standard size valves, an RV cam from Crane designed for torque, Thorley headers w/2.5" duals and finally Holly's 950 series fuel injection system.

I have no dyno numbers, but I have a truck that now gets 12 - 12.5 MPG, climbs any hill without complaint, and should prove most satisfactory with the A/S. My truck is my handle: Dinoburb. It's old, but it's paid for and has 115,000 miles and no rust as well as most of the bells and whistles of the newer models without the overhead!

Old trucks and old trailers . . . a comfortable combination!

I have a 2001 Excursion with the V-10 engine that I use to tow my '78 Airstream Excella 31' trailer. The Excursion is on an F350 frame. I use the factory installed receiver matched with the Reese hitch and dual cam sway control. The SUV is rated at 10,000lb and the receiver and hitch at 1200lb tongue weight.

The trailer weighs about 7000 lb although I haven't had it on the scales yet.

Without the trailer I get 15mpg and 11mpg towing.

I am in the process of stripping the clear coat off and will polish it as soon as the Cyclo polisher and other paraphanalia arrive from PerfectPolish.com.

Tow ratings

I read farther back up the thread the wise remark about tow vehicles....You can tow with just about anything as long as the load doesn't upset the capacity of the tow vehicle.

I have towed a 34' A/S through the mountains in Colorado with a 1/2 ton 350 Suburban (carburator, no less) with no problems.
Have towed a 92 21 Sovereign over 200k with a 4.6 Liter Crown Victoria (which has over 400k!)

Match the Tow vehicle to the load. Then equip the tow vehicle to handle the job as effortlessly as possible. Drive sanely. Realize that you WILL slow down on hills, up or down.

Tow Vehicle

I pull my 30' Excella with a 2001 Dodge Cummings 3500 duelly 4x4, High Output Engine with six speed manual trany. I also have a Jacobs Exhaust Brake installed. This truck will handle anything that is asked of it, safely, with narry a complaint, both uphill and downhill. I average 13.5 mpg while towing, 20 solo. I turn 1850 rpm at 65 mph, 2050 at 70. Its a very rare grade that requires shifting below 5th gear, and never have I had to drop below 4 th because of incline.

Desending I simply decide how fast I wish to go, put it in the appropriate gear, place both of my feet flat on the floor and relax.

I guess you could call my rig overkill, but when I pull into camp at night I am not stressed out, my old bones don't ache and my wife isn't mad. When she's happy, everyone's happy.

I pull my 1992 Sovereign 21' with a Range Rover (Landrover) 4,6 HSE, which has an air suspension. The hitch weight of my Sovereign 21' is just 70 kg (which is low as compared to Airstream trailers in the USA), due to the placement of the axles right in the center of the trailer - which is usual for the European version of the Sovereign, because you will not find too many European cars being able to tow large A/Ss.

The Quest / Villiager series has a load carrying capacity factory rated at 1,430 LBs. That is higher than most full size basic pickup trucks. A seven passenger van needs to be built tough enough to handle the weight and high centre of gravity of 7 adults plus gear. I guess it would be classed as a 3/4 ton.

Our Quest is conservativly factory tow rated at 3,500lbs. Our 23' Safari's dry weight is 3,450lbs. With options and camp gear around 4,300lbs. We test drove many front drive V6/front wheel drive combinations before choosing this van. Some of our test drives included a 1993 Intrepid towing a 31 foot A/S. A Ford Windstar towing a 25 ft' Trailite. We also researched and followed the studies of numberous V6 vehicles towing 34' A/S's with great success. In contrast our Quest towing our 23' Safari seems like an overkill. We are very satisfied with our setup especially the versatility of the minivan.

We are the overkill.....1995 31' Limited being drug around by a 2000 F350 dually w/crew cab.We are going to trade for a 2003 F250 diesel 7.3 XLT SB w/ 4x4.As much as we love the current truck...getting stuck on a flat surface is not fun.And the dually is a challenge in parking lots sometimes.Test drove the new diesel 6.0 lt......more power..quieter..all around better engine.Duramax is in for it.

We tow our 25ft tradewind with a Dodge B350 Extended van. The van has a 360V8 and 3.90something gears, 16" tires and wheels, and a tow package with trans cooler etc.
We like the space and ease of which to load and use the van vs. a truck. Plus, the van is big enough to be used as a "spare bedroom" if necessary, even with 7-seat capacity.

Might I suggest you consider a single rear wheel F350? This and the F250 are, part for part, identical trucks, with the one exception that the F350 is jacked up higher in the back than the F250, by using 4" blocks rather than the F250's 2" blocks, so it doesn't look as loaded as the F250 does with the same load.

Both trucks can only handle a bit over 2,000 lbs in the bed without going into the overload springs, but the F250 will LOOK more loaded down, and will be well over it's 8800lb GVWR. The F250 does NOT ride any smoother than the SRW F350, and it wouldn't with the same springs.

Ford gives the SRW F350 a 9900 lb GVWR and the F250 only an 8800 lb rating, despite their frames, drivetrains, springs, axles, and brakes being identical, and the tires being the same if the F250 has the optional LT265 tires (std on the F250 Laredo).

These trucks are VERY heavy, especially with the weight of the diesel, the 4WD, and the crew cab, all which come out of the payload despite putting most of their weight on the front axle.

You can easily exceed the 8800 lb GVWR of a PSD/4WD/SC-LB or CC-SB F250 with very little load.

I have with 2300 lbs of shingles in my F250, and it was just starting to go into the overload springs and the bed was dead level, where an SRW F350 would still be 2" tail high at the rear wheels. But I was way over legal GVWR. The SRW F350 springs would've been just as loaded down but the jacked up rear wouldn't make appear to be so.

I'll also be over GVWR if I ever haul the Harley while pulling the trailer.

Several things made me choose to go the '02 7.3L F250 route over ordering a '03 6.0L SRW F350. Part of that decision was recognizing I might not be legal all the time.

Just thought you should know.

BTW, I've had to use 4WD on a level surface too. It's amazing how little traction there is on dew-laden grass.
