This is an interesting thread and merits a "bump."

My original reply to this thread was back in November 2006 and we had owned our Airstream for about 4 years. Now, 10 years and many thousands of miles later, I'm happy to say we are both retired early from our corporate jobs and I like to say "our job is not to have a job." That is, we are now responsible for navigating the sometimes up, sometimes down economic cycles and ensuring our lifestyle fits within our financial resources to ensure we don't have to w*rk again.

Thanks to Andy R (owner of Air Forums) and all the folks on the early-retirement.org web site for their bountiful knowledge on the subject of FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early).

I was reading some of the recent posts and stumbled across yours. Looks like your retirement ship comes in in a couple of days. Hoping you can get on it.

My wife is a third grade teacher and can retire in 5 years. She loves teaching and is dedicated working at least 60 hours per week. Unfortunately, she hates her principal and the administration.

I was a mechanical engineer my first 20 years then invested in real estate which ended in a disaster. I am now semi retired and am quite content. I enjoy going to music festivals, snow skiing and kayaking and wondering around Florida when the skiing is not so good. When I am not traveling and having fun, I am a private home inspector and also do home repairs and home renovation work. However, if I have something fun to do I don't let work get in the way. I don't think that I will ever retire completely. I enjoy the satisfaction of the work that I do.

I love camping in our Tradewind, but when I am traveling long distances by myself to music festivals or going to Florida during the week I take my VW golf with my kayak on top and my bicycle inside and I tent camp. I still enjoy tent camping and sleep just fine.

As little as possible. Double retired, triple dipping.

AWchief, you are my hero!

Sadly, I fear the days of retirement pensions are going to phased out..

Oh yeah, it's happening. None of my kids have pensions with their work. My pension was frozen in 2006....didn't lose what I had....but stopped there. Replaced by more employer 401k compensation. But the last 8 years have not helped on that front.

I am a planner and landscape architect. Love using our Airstream to get out and escape urban life. My wife is an architect and we both love the aesthetic of our second home. We are decades away from retirement, only have 3 weeks apiece paid leave, so most of our outings will be nearby.

Both my hubby and I are real estate brokers. Owning our own business allows you to travel when we want. Certain times of year are harder to get away tho.

All old threads aren't dead!

I'm an educator of 31 years, served in many roles. Currently I am a Technology Specialist training/working with students and teachers using technology. I also have worked as an adjunct professor in various universities' colleges of education in undergraduate to graduate and doctoral studies and tutor people of various ages AND; plan on substitute teaching in the near future. I retire from public school June '17!!
@AWCHIEF and DZNF0G, Pensions are still out there but, in FL, changed quite a bit. Last year's retirees represented the end of the older/better benefits wagon- higher interest DROP 6-8%, 3% COLA, etc. My group, the transitionals still get a COLA but reduced and our DROP is like 1.5%.After that, no COLA, more years to qualify and supposedly, according to stats, 72% of FL teachers never make it to full retirement- late entry, early out, move, etc., so I am blessed but it hasn't been easy.

I'll need gasoline money, a camping slush fund, LP and whatever else "Alumination" needs!

Rodster, you are correct. I come from a family of educators, and state and federal employees. Those categories seem to be the last touched and my family members are shocked to hear of potential "sacrifices " coming their way. Most of which left the private sector many years ago. COLA left me in 1985 or 86. My wife will retire from teaching in May 2018, but there is a lot of talk she won't get what she worked for all these years. Illinois is corrupt and very near bankruptcy.

We are both retired from the Navy, and state and federal service. We spend half the year enjoying our grandchildren who live down the street and others nearby. The other half traveling with our Airstream. She enjoys many hobbies, we do gardening together, and with an interest in art and architecture I do some house design for our friends and family. We also have a new house building project we do together.

We do fine financially and have a long habit of buying nothing we can't save and pay for up front, or buy more than we need. We are careful how we spend because we fully realize our pensions and benefits are only safe when the legislature and congress are not in session. So we keep savings and have invested in land.

We've had some serious health issues, all the more reason to live fully and as it will never end. Let it take us by surprise.
