Doubting this thread will get much traction with most people, but let me just say that THIS was a smoking hot deal. That trailer was worth low-mid 40s for sure. Well done !

I did hesitate a little at posting my purchase price because I got such a great deal. I did not hesitate for a moment when I spotted the deal on RVTrader.com. My guess is that the owners hadn’t researched the current market and had asked a consignment dealer about selling the camper for them. The dealer told them that they would sell it for $39k and give them $31k. They opted to sell it themselves for $33k. I emailed them immediately and started driving shortly after (before I had even confirmed that they would sell it to me). Showing up with cash in hand and prepared to tow away that day were the determining factors. I hope that I didn’t make anybody uncomfortable about their purchase, I was just lucky this time.

I think that's awesome! I feel you should be proud of making such a great deal. I'm thrilled with our purchase and even though we had to react quickly, I feel we also paid a fair market price for our area.
After our experience, I feel especially the used market is red hot and you have to be prepared for any decent deal that comes your way.
Sounds like you did just that!

On the contrary, so many times I've seen people say they are serious buyers only to then "have to find one within 100 miles" hem and haw over it and then complain that someone beat them to it.
You are the perfect example of why if you're "serious" then do all the research, know your market and be READY to go at a moment's notice to get the one that's right for you.
Congratulations and well done

I really think this would be an informative thread if it's kept up to date. Unfortunately I also think quite a bit of folks overpay and feel sheepish posting their purchases. I have been involved with Airstreams for quite a while and honestly the asking prices on almost every unit, especially the "vintage" units is way out of wack IMO.

I really do hope it is kept up to date. I believe it would truly give a good scope on valuation, because from what I've seen so far, there isn't a source that is anywhere close to accurate.
There probably is quite a bit of overpaying. I believe there is also quite a bit of undervaluing going on in the trade-in side at dealerships because they're able to confuse folks with those wildly inaccurate NADA "values," buy them on trade-ins for next to nothing, and report that as a "purchase." This affects private purchasers who want to finance and can't on a unit sometimes only five years old from their local bank or credit union (why would they want to risk lending on something the NADA values at $14,000 and the sale price is $30,000?) and then forces Airstream buyers out of the private market into a dealership so they then purchase and finance at the dealership.
At least, this is what appears to be the case sometimes.

My 2 cents on overpaying:
I really believe that if a buyer is willing to pay a given amount, it's worth it to that buyer. That's not necessarily overpaying. Think about it - prices might trend upward (private market, dealer, NADA, wherever) because current buyers start paying more than previous buyers. (Downward price trends of course work the same in reverse.)
Have the new buyers overpaid? Maybe. Or maybe demand is such that a higher price is justified. Values also are reported as average price paid in xx recent months - so some paid less, some paid more - some got a better deal, and some others got what they wanted by paying more without losing it to another buyer because demand is up.
P.S. If you paid 2 cents for the above opinion, you may have overpaid.

Yes. The value of something to an individual buyer is what he will actually pay. The problem is when a lot of purchasers are not individual buyers, but dealers buying trade-ins at a very deflated value because they will make their money selling the same trailer marked up AND they are counting on financing a used Airstream that can't be financed at conventional outside sources due to low valuations which they assist by reporting their trade-in purchases which are below value (of course, because they are in business to make a profit).
I feel we got ours for a very fair price. We did not get a "bargain." However, we missed out on another well-priced Airstream by waiting 24 hours too long to go see the trailer.
It took us a while to find another one in our price range, condition, size, weight and within 500 miles, but once we did, we did not make that mistake again and we went prepared to purchase on the spot. From what I'm reading, it looks like in my area of the country for used Airstreams under ten or twelve years old, the market is pretty competitive.
