I initially joined the Navy to serve my country. During my 6 year hitch, I went on a UNITAS cruise which took me to every coastal country in South America and a few places in Central America. It really did seal the deal for me as to where the best place in the world is to live. These people are unfathomably poor to the point that they were throwing elbows into the faces of children so they could get to pennies that some of my less than intelligent shipmates were flipping from the windows of our bus.

In Venezuela, an 18 year old man doesn't have the option to join the military or go to college....It's a mandatory requirement that they do two years of military service. Upon completion of that service they are issued an ID card. If caught on the street without that ID card, they have no proof that they ever went and it's back they go.

Thank you for the support you have given me in my endeavor, and thank you to all the men and women who have EVER served this great nation in ANY way. I appreciate my freedom. God bless.

Marine Corps

I did 12 plus years with the Marines, got out, was recalled for the last two years with the Reserves, and am now back to starting my civilian life. Bought my Airstream in 1998, and lived in it full time first two years of owning it in Monterey, CA and Quantico, VA. When I got out, and was recalled, it was my Airstream that was my home away from home while I was in North Carolina and my wife and two boys were in central NY. Now, I am a contrator for the Marines and a drilling Reservist here in the Quantico, VA area, and use one of my Airstreams as a mobil office, place to sleep while on the road. Loving every minute of it!

About 450 people have viewed this thread as of the time of this writing. 42 have voted. About 10%. Not bad. I suspect that is higher than in the general population of the country.

Once again, thanks to all.

Like some others, I too avoided the draft by enlisting.

8 years Marine Corps here, working on and also being a gunner on H-46's and UH-1N's. My heart is with all of those serving this country home and overseas!

I served in the Navy (viet nam era) as my dad did (WW11 and korea...
on submarines), and like him, I was proud to serve. My only regret
was I didn't go for 20.
