Moderators - is this survey a scam?

About a week ago I completed the Airstream survey located at the top of the portal listing. Since that time I have received two emails from someone who claims to be doing a followup survey and offering $100. The first email I deleted, but this second email is a bit concerning because the person wants to come by and meet me.

Dear Mary,
Thank you for completing our Airstream Owner Survey.
We are currently conducting our follow up interviews and it turns out that I will be very close to you and your Airstream this Thursday and I wanted to ask if we could come by and meet you.
The interview will only take about 30 minutes and the incentive is $100.
If you would like to participate please let me know.
thanks
Keith

The email is from someone named Keith McVaney kmcvd@mac.com

As I said, I only received these emails after completing the survey on this site. I have blocked this sender. Can one of the moderators check this out?

Mary

The linked survey itself is definately not a scam. It is being conducted by Airstream Inc. You may want to contact them directly to see if this additional contact/offer is actually legitimate or not. If not and you decide to do it, enjoy the extra $100!

Just completed the survey. Lot of "fashion statement" questions with reference to Airstream brand on what appear to be unrelated merchandise.

I tried to steer answers to a point where I view Airstream as a functional RV first, I want quality, I would have another RV if I didn't have Airstream. Any flash, styling etc. has a proportioned influence not an overwhelming one.

Too bad they limited me to 500 words. My first sentance was to ditch the wood floors and go with something which doesn't rot.

The questions about the Airstream-branded merchandise were a little disturbing. Seems like AS should spend their efforts making better Airstreams, not slapping their label on everything from coffee to boats.

I let them know that I wasn't overly interested in "merchandise", and that they need to concentrate on building a quality trailer - paying attention to quality control, fit and finish issues, etc.
I thought it was a good oportunity to give them honest feedback from the users of their product.

Mary, be sure and let us know what you find out. I'm really curious about them wanting to send someone to talk to you. Of course, even if it is legit, you can still request they do it by email if you don't want to meet with someone in person.

There are lots of phoney links out here in the wild wild internet. How do any of us really know who we are 'talking' to? My real concern with the email I received from "Keith" is that it didn't look professional. It wasn't signed with his full name, job title, company name and contact information such as address and phone number. The email address did not appear to be on a company server like joe.smo@airstreamcompany.com The only way I could contact this guy is to respond to his email!

I am suspicious of anyone who just happens to be in my neighborhood and wants to stop over for half an hour and give me a hundred bucks!

I did send an email to Airstream using the link provided in this thread. I will post the reply.

unfortunately, my guess is their marketing department is most interested in the survey for that exact thing dave pointed out, merchandising, and trying to get the airstream label out in as many different ways possible ultimately, to increase sales of the new trailers. i'd wager a guess they are less concerned about quality and more about quantity.

I noticed the email address wasn't a business email. That is a bit suspicious. I think forwarding it to AS is the best action, and see what they say about it. I'll be interested to hear. I'm guessing they're using some service to follow up on surveys that is using consultants or isn't quite up to the level of having corporate emails.

I think it would be pretty difficult for anyone to have subverted the AS survey information to turn it against folks in a scam.

Thumbs down

I would hope that Airstream, Inc. is not sending any of the survey info out as possible leads for "sales follow up" to Airstream Dealers~!

We also compleated the survey...used all 500 spaces (not words).

Just wish I had made a copy, don't even know if that was possible..

did anyone try?

Stressed quality, quality, quality, not really expecting a reply, but who knows

Made it a point to let them know how unhappy we are about not having

a dealer in NYS!!!

It's not a scam. Keith is working with Airstream on that survey and he genuinely wants to listen and learn from a broad range of Airstream owners. Janet is going to contact Airstream and suggest to them that they clarify the situation so you all can rest assured that your information is not being used for sales or in any unethical way.

FordTruck -- The previous post from Andy R said quite clearly that this survey followup seems to be appropriate. I would agree that Airstream did not make this clear and left room for misinterpretation.

@mac.com is a domain for Mac users and includes setting up email addresses. I know my brother uses this for emailing from his iPhone.

Please, let's take a pause to get specific clarification from Airstream. That is being set in motion by moderator Janet. Kindly give it a chance. Thank you.

Just an update - I contacted the Director of Marketing at Airstream about this.

The e-mail you got was legit. They are working with a contracted brand planner to do a more indepth look at smattering of survey responses.

I have suggested a little clearer communication and identification by the folks doing this work but I am THRILLED that Airstream has chosen to ask our members more about their preferences. AIR members have so much experience and insight to offer - and I applaud Airstream Inc for being proactive and find out what this generation of 'Streamers wants and how they use their trailers.

Mary - I forwarded you more detail about who to contact if you have questions. You are under no obligation to respond to the e-mail, but it could be fun and interesting.

I was told that Airstreams contractor will be contacting several folks who completed the survey for a more indepth interview, again, all voluntary.

AIR members are the biggest fans and the harshest critics of Airstreams, and have a lot of good info to offer. Good luck Mary, let us know how you spend the 100 bucks

Email from Keith OK

I want to let others know that one of the moderators, Janet, contacted Airstream to ask about the email I received from Keith who wanted to stop by my house to interview me. I am happy to tell everyone she confirmed that this guy is working for the Airstream marketing department and is legit.

I will not take him up on his offer to interview me because I will be out of town on Thursday.

I also want to thank Janet and the moderators for investigating this concern. The internet is a wonderful communication media, but we all have heard of cases where this wonderful media has done serious harm to people. My peace of mind is worth the $100 I missed out on.

Well, it's good to check, and now everyone knows AS might actually come knocking with a $100 bill, which is nice. Obviously they are taking the survey and people's comments seriously. I hope it helps them develop even more great products in the next few years.
