Headliner failure

How many of you have experienced the dreaded headliner failure in your Airstream? We are talking about the situation where the headliner detaches either from the trailer ceiling or where the ceiling material detaches from its backer. Take the poll (above) and record the model year of your trailer if you have this problem.

What poll?
Yes we have the dreaded headliner droop. It appeared when the temps got really cold. I am waiting for warm weather when the vinyl is more stretchy to attack the problem. 1996 28' Excella.

Both of my Classics (2003, 2005) have been OK.

My 2003 International 22 had a fuzzy cloth headliner that partially fell down over the front bedroom area. I pulled down the plastic bow at the seam and spreayed above the headliner with 3M spray adhesive. It then stayed up fine as long as I owned the trailer. The current owners told me that the headliner later sagged in the rear, over the galley.

Interesting since the poll was there as soon as I created this thread. I'm not sure what happened on your side but I saw it as soon as the thread was created....hmmm...yes one of those mysteries..

Folks,

There is another string started regarding this same issue. If you type in ceiling under the search than you will find it. Several folks have also experienced this problem. Frustrating that AS won't do anything about it. Appears that this has affected models through the 90's and early 2000's. I even found a couple folks who have late 1980 models who have experienced this problem. One member on the other string stated that the Fed's required AS to use a water base adhesive in the 90's and that was the reason for the falling ceiling.
I actually contacted AS and they won 't do anything about it. I was told that when they first found out about it they did offer some assistance in repairing them but no longer offer that. If anyone would like to see the coorespondence I've had with AS just let me know and I will forward them to you.

Thanks Jack for starting the poll, it is interesting to see the total numbers of folks with the headliner problem. Glad to know we're not the only ones dealing with the issue. It is nice to look at the creative ideas folks have to deal with it in other threads, this thread is useful in itself to get an idea of stats.

You're welcome. I've seen enough of these trailers and complaints to know that there definitely is an issue here. Trailers in that mid 90's range shouldn't have falling ceilings and that to me smells more like a product defect than an individual manufacturing problem that affects a trailer here and there.

While I can't speak to whether this poll will help any of you in getting a resolution with Airstream, my instinct says that if we get some significant numbers here, it cant hurt you in your efforts.

Hey that's the old warranty. I'm pretty sure most of the folks who own the years in question didn't receive this one. Isn't that warranty part of the Byam owned era trailers?

We have friends who bought a new Classic late last year and there is a place in their liner (wallcovering?)that measures about 8 to 10 inches diameter which is detached. It is not actually on the ceiling, but on the curve of the wall just above the bed, curbside. Guess there is nothing they can have done. It's not bad yet, you have to push on it to actually see that it is detached. We'll have to keep an eye on it.

My 59 Ambassador International still has it's original Zolatone ceiling paint in great shape! 47 years..................I guess Wally did know a thing or two about quality.

Well if it's under warranty, I'd advise them that they should get this taken care of now....fix it before it gets bad and the solution to repair the situation gets more complex.
