Black Friday. Shopping or Camping?

Lots of news recently about the upcoming Black Friday sales. I'm mostly not interested as it seems televisions dominate the adds and my television at home is just fine. However this got me to thinking and wondering: Why have I not ever gone shopping on Black Friday?

I was then reminded that my family is camping this Thanksgiving weekend. In fact, looking back, that's been a pattern. Mostly in Death Valley or Morrow Bay. My wife will successfully rise to the challenge of baking a turkey (or parts) and a pie in the Airstream oven. We'll take some walks and catch a football game that day. This year I'll probably be on the golf course with my son on Black Friday.

So what are your plans for the day? Do you look forward to the challenge of securing the best deal at the store or hitching up and getting out?

We do our large family Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Friday. That way the individual families can do their get together on Thursday without rushing from house to house.

We don't participate in Black Friday but we do appreciate sales and thriftiness just not madness. I know for some families its a tradition and adventure and they make a fun day of it. More power to you.

For us it gotten a bit out of hand with stores opening on Thursday afternoon to lure you in.

Is it not okay to just stay home, with family or not, family is not always the greatest gift but surely shopping is not the end all.

We put up lights, and also go camping with the 4CU Unit if their gathering is local that year.

Working!

I think my boss's name is Ebenezer Scrooge!

To make it ever worse, all the employees have to chip in so we can have a Thanksgiving luncheon the week before.

I think I'll be looking for a new job shortly!

We'll be in New Mexico 55 miles from the nearest retail store. That ought to keep us safe, quiet and thrifty.

On Black Friday I will be at DeGray Lake Resort State Park, near Bismarck, Arkansas, hitting the hiking trails to work off the previous day's superb Thanksgiving Day buffet put on at the park's lodge.

Just winterized the camper. Black Friday I stay home and work in my shop. I may make and early trip to Florida to check on the trailer down there.

On Black Friday we want to be as far from any retail venues as possible. Camping in the middle of Death Valley would be just about right. Sounds like a wonderful weekend.

Both-
We go to a campground Thursday. My wife and her friend go shopping. I camp. We use the trailer as a Black Friday staging area- a place to put the grandbaby's Santa Claus-
While they are shopping till they drop I hang around the campfire and enjoy myself.

My only retail excursion that day is to PepBoys. They typically have a great deal on synthetic oil, that I have not seen matched anywhere else or at any other time.

Even if I wasn't going to be camping I wouldn't bother with Black Friday shopping. Who needs Black Friday when Cyber Monday is right around the corner?

We will be doing our first Thanksgiving in the woods, and will be camping at Martin Dies Jr State Park in east Texas. I hope to spend black Friday fishing and biking with my kids.

I just hope the weather stays dry.

I get the fun of nuking a Turkey in an infra red cooker Thanksgiving Thursday for my wife's former extended family and her four daughters (we all get along well) and Friday I prep and cook a nine pound rib eye roast for nearly the same crew at our place.

The scene in the movie Lawrence of Arabia after the great meal and the sheik tells Lawrence to show some appreciation by burping/belching comes to mind around this time of year.

Camping!

This Thanksgiving week we are hosting Dinner at Battleground Lake, WA.
It is our first holiday with the Airstream and we want to share it. I am bringing along the Traegger to cook the turkey in, since it will be a challenge to finish everything in the tiny Magic Chef
Black Friday I am sleeping in and enjoying the peace and quiet of nature. No mobs of shoppers for me!

I guess it is neither for us, unless we end up at our daughter's house in Fort Lauderdale where we may take the trailer to avoid overloading her house with our three dogs. In years past we have just had a family day at home, with only one exception when DW and DD were in line at Circuit City (remember them?) at 5:30 or so to buy laptops.

All these descriptions of great camping spots have got me wanting to head out!

Al

After 5 years of drought and empty lakes we finally have water so I have been out on the lake every chance till the temps drop below 40, gonna see if I can wear out my kayak, give me an excuse to treat myself to a new one for christmas.

This being our 1st year with our AS, we have reservations at Grayland Beach State Park on the Pacific Ocean (Washington) - wanted to get one more camping trip in before the winter sets in.

GBSP is wonderful as long as there's no storm coming in from the Pacific. Bring your kites and take them out for a fly!
