Smile Asheville, NC

Hi All,
I'm planning a trip to the Asheville, NC area in mid-October. Any suggestions on campgrounds and things to do besides visit the Biltmore? I appreciate your thoughts.

We've toured this campground but never stayed there. The view is spectacular.

Mountaintop Camping - Blue Ridge Parkway North Carolina

As for things to do:

If you really want to be pampered there is the spa at:

The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn | Asheville, North Carolina Spa Resort

Good bar-b-que at:

12 Bones · Welcome

Though I prefer food at:

Okie Dokies

If you want to get outdoors I suggest a ride on the Creeper Trail. We used a shuttle in Damascus, VA a few years ago and it was a blast. The ride in October should be spectacular and the best part is that its almost all downhill.

The Bike Station | Virginia Creeper Bike Trail | Damascus, Virginia

Downtown Asheville is eclectic with plenty of shops, micro breweries, etc.

The jewel of the area is the Flat Rock Playhouse. We've attended some great shows and concerts there.

Last year we stayed at Asheville Bear Creek because it is in town and close to everything. Small park, tight spaces but a very nice view and convenient. I would go back there although I prefer bigger CG's.
We spend a lot of time in Asheville. Great restaurants, a mecca for craft beer, cheeses, etc. The third week of October is the Southern Highlands Craft fair at the civic center, unlike any craft fair you have ever seen. Plenty of shops in Asheville for any taste, jewelry, textiles, pottery, food.
I think all of the hippies left California and moved to Asheville so you will see some vestiges of that.

Campfire Lodgings... the entrance road is not for the faint of heart! Bear Creek wasn't bad either.

Question? Do you want full hook up and how long will you be staying?

If you want some beauty, go to Davidson River Campground in the Pisgah National Forest just outside Brevard , NC.

Lake powanton is also a Forest Service park with power sites just outside Asheville.

Too many campgrounds to mention.

Asheville, NC

We go to the NC mountains almost every Fall. Asheville is a great town, but we like to stay in Hendersonville, NC which is about 25 miles away down I-26. We usually stay at, Lakewood RV resort. It is not far off I-26 and a clean, quiet well run RV park.

As far as things to do be sure to visit the NC Arboretum in Asheville. It is beautiful and is pet friendly (except inside buildings and certain gardens).

If you stay in Hendersonville you are also really close to the Carl Sandburg home. It is also only about 25 miles from Asheville
Definitely worth a visit whether in Asheville or Hendersonville.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service)

Also very convenient to Hendersonville is Dupont Forest which has some really beautiful waterfalls. A good number of these waterfalls are featured in the film, "The Last of the Mohicans".
Dupont State Forest Waterfalls Tour Hike
Just a few miles down the road from Dupont Forest is the Davidson River Campground. Not many electric sites, but a scenic campground on the Davidson River which is in the Pisgah National Forest.
National Forests in North Carolina - Davidson River Campground
Two easy to access waterfalls within Pisgah National Forest are Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock.
Lastly Hendersonville is in the heart of NC apple country. Grandad's Apples is a fun place to visit with great fried apple pies.
GRANDAD'S APPLES N' SUCH — Apples-Pumpkins-Corn Maze-Hendersonville-NC Mountains near Asheville

Enjoy your visit. The Asheville/Hendersonville area is beautiful in the Fall.

In my opinion, some important things to see and do in the Ashville area are:
1. Tour the Biltmore Estate. Also, read about the estate and perhaps a little about George Vanderbilt before you go.
2. Drive a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway (at least to Mt. Pisgah if not all the way to Cherokee, NC) to get a sense of what this region of the Appalachians looked like when the Europeans arrived. You'll need to do this without your trailer in tow.

I'm originally from Eastern Tennessee (Cleveland) and the region around Asheville is beautiful. If you went to Cherokee and toured some of the attractions regarding the Cherokee nation, native Americans, the forced removal, etc. , the settlement by Europeans, the influence of the extremely wealthy by folks like Vanderbilt...you'd get a great overview of the whole region and have a great trip besides!

We have stayed at Mama Gertie's Campground in Swannanoa (near Asheville). The town of Black Mountain is also nearby and is a delightful place to visit. At Mama Gertie's, reserve a site on the second or third (top) level. Facilities are first rate and there is a huge Ingle's grocery store nearby. We have also stayed at Bear Creek Campground. We found the back-in sites to be way too tight for our liking. The pull throughs are located right next to a local road (meaning the end of the rig is parked only a few feet from the edge of the local road). Definitely read the reviews for Bear Creek on RV Park Reviews (website). We enjoyed taking the Gray Line Hop on/Hop off trolley tour. You can begin the tour at the Asheville Visitor Center which has a nice parking lot for your tow vehicle.

Enjoy your stay in Asheville. It is a beautiful town with lots to do.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. We are going to be looking for full-hook-ups since we'll be there for a week. I checked the Powhatan Lake area and can't book there until mid-April. I'd like the views at Campground Lodgings, is the cost difference worth it? You all gave me some great ideas - better than the Department of Commerce

If you have never been to Mount Mitchell go there if you can on a clear day. It's the highest point in USA east of the Mississippi. In October it will be VERY cold. You can take your 25' trailer anywhere on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but not up to Mt Mitchell.

If you enjoy waterfalls, pickup a pamphlet when you get to the area. You can spend days driving from fall to fall.

Canoe, raft, or tube the French Broad River that runs right through West Asheville.

Fontana Village and dam.

The Dragons Tail if you enjoy scenic curvy roads

The Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway right outside Asheville.

Cades Cove to see wildlife. Turkey, deer, elk, bear are common

Chattahoochee Valley to see wildlife. Turkey, deer, elk, bear are common

Cherokee area includes trout fishing, Harrah's Casino, and the normal tourist trap stuff.

Great Smokey Mountain NP

Western NC Nature Center

NC Arboretum at Asheville

There are a few local craft breweries in Asheville.

The campground at Pisgah Lodge is one of my favorites, but no hookups. The restaurant at Pisgah Lodge is great! And, the view while you dine is AWESOME

Bryson City - to ride a steam powered train, The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad

The Farmers Market at Asheville is worth a few hours.

Discount Shoe has more that 10,000 pairs of shoes (my wife loves it)
