By the way - is there a secret thing that mac users do with the apple decals? I'd hate to misuse mine and be ridiculed as being one of the great unwashed.

When you learn the secret handshake, a Mac user will show you where he or she has applied the decal to his or her body.

I dunno. I haven't stuck mine anywhere. I even still have the rainbow coloured stickers I got from my first apple back in the late 80's. Maybe I should plaster them all over my Tradewind.

After much deliberation...I just ordered a Dell Precision 4400...my 4th laptop and 3rd Dell. Came close to MacBook Pro...but went for one more PC due my knowledge "investment" in PC world...and the fact that my Dells have really been quite stable and reliable. Only one "malware" in 12-15 years and that was one where I ignored a security warning when downloading some HP printer software...thought it must have been an error
My wife will use my old Dell for a bit as she determines what her "style" needs are...very possible that in about a year we will replace that five+ year old Dell with a new MacBook Pro...I have wanted to return to Mac since the old Macintosh Plus...no hard drive and small black and white screen. Business applications and MS Office made it impossible to do so until about now...MS Office Mac is "close" to universal file compatibility with MS Office PC...new MS Office Mac 2011 or 2012 will likely complete that goal.
Already feel bad...a new MBP would sure have been fun and they sure are "pretty".
BTW...I bet my nearly five year old Dell will seem like a "snail" when I get the new Precision...All speed features...from the wireless data transfers, the dual core chip, the much faster hard drive and the discrete video card should be noticeable.
I hope my 3-5 year experience with this new Dell is a good as the five years with my current Dell...but it still will never be a Mac...kind of like an SOB vs an AS
Tom
EDIT Canceled the Dell order and bought a Mac!
Dell was promised by last Friday or next Monday...which was important to us and part of the order requirement. Got e-mail yesterday moving shipment until next Friday...which did not work for our needs.
Cancelled the Dell and went to Apple store at Mall of America and purchased a 17" MacBookPro! Have it up and running internet and Mail so it will be ready for my wife's use Monday. I am beginning the PC to Mac learning curve...but so far not tooooooo tough. I plan on using a bit of one-on-one Apple training and purchased 3 year Apple Care.
BTW...the new MBP will be for my wife and I will keep my current Dell for another year and then will decide if we become a two Mac family
In many many ways. We are a minority in the large universe of PCs just like Airstreams are to the SOB trailers everywhere. Macs are a niche product, not for every one like Airstreams. It is a high-end brand make to last like AS.
It costs more than other competitive products but after you write out the check you can enjoy it for life. It has the most passionate owner community of any product on earth, much like the people in this forum have for their trailers. It is an American Icon as Apple made history in the personal computer universe like Airstream did in the 50's and 60's.
Lastly the Aluminum body of the Mac Books and MBP's with the new rounded corners make you wonder it the product engineers took a few cues from the curved skin of an Airstream. ok maybe I'm taking it a bit too far but you get the picture.
Tom, the 17" screen is great. Takes a lot of room on my dinette table, but I can keep many windows open and see parts of each one. And unlike an Airstream, my Mac doesn't break. It's more than design for Apple.
By the way the name "windows" came from Apple. Later Microsoft copied it just like they always copy from Apple, except their copies are like a bad fax.
This one doesn't cover the Snow Leopard release but it can help with your basic understanding. I have had the MBP for 2 years now. I've been so happy that this summer I bought a 24" iMac. It's a great desktop machine. My Dell desktop will go into a different room with its job to be running some of our Windows games.
