I have question about the iPad and a digital newspaper subscription.

I'm thinking of getting an iPad because it will be cheaper to subscribe to the NY Times digital edition than the mail edition. I get the mail edition now and it is pretty poorly mailed—comes late, out of order, in clumps, not at all, or when it isn't supposed to be. In 2 to 3 years the iPad would pay for itself.

The good thing about print is portability. I can take a paper in the truck and read it, read it in restaurants, and of course, that most important place, the toilet. This assumes wifi ios not available. Using 3G networks means more expense and they aren't always available either. With the digital edition I get on my laptop, every story and every page of that story have to be individually downloaded. If that is necessary with the iPad edition, the Times is not portable. Why shouldn't it be if they can download an entire book at once?

I spoke to 3 people at Apple and the first two didn't seem to know what I was talking about; the 3rd said I could download the whole paper. I e-mailed the Times. The 1st e-mail was never answered, the 2nd was answered in a manner that was impossible to understand. I exchanged e-mail with a Times media columnist and he says it can be downloaded. I'll go to the Apple store in Denver in several weeks and ask them to demonstrate it.

Has any one of the many Mac users out there used the iPad for newspaper reading? NY Times?

After I get this figured out, I have to see if I can download the paper from the iPad to the MacBook.

Except for the embedded videos and some photos the Wall Street Journal loads on my iPad at one time very fast, each day. And I like the layout. Very much like the print version. Updates during the day can be received or rejected as you prefer.

Are you going to use a specific New York Times app or purchase it through iBooks or Nook app. I don't know about the NYT app but if you use iBooks or the Nook app it will download and then it's there regardless of if you have internet or not.

Thanks Ronnie and Royce. I have no idea about various NYT apps—I didn't even know there were different ones. It looks like this will work for me, but I don't know how Barb and I can share the paper at the same time.

I can get the local paper here on iPad or from a web application and they download the paper to read when you want offline. Only solution to you and the wife reading the iPad paper at once is 2 I pads

Greg, 22 Macs in 25 years. You must drop them a lot.

Gene - ha, ha - no, it's just a matter of always wanting the latest, and an office which will support me in doing that. The list is a combination of home and office, there are six of the Macs, and all of the iPads and iPhones still in active use today. The BEST story was yesterday. The WiFi component on my original iPad went out on Oct. 10th. I took it in to an Apple Store in Charlotte, NC, on my travels yesterday afternoon. The tech looked at it for a few minutes and replaced it with a brand new original iPad. I provisioned it this afternoon and all it well - no charge! That's outstanding customer service.

1 MacBook Pro
1 ancient laptop running XP Pro (just until I'm really sure that my kid's aren't going to drop a Mac! )
1 other PC Laptop (Other half refuses to come to the "dark side!" )

I've gone Apple and never looked back . . .

I can not even imagine that anyone who owns an Airstream anything would use anything other than a mac. i have been a devotee since 1992 and never looked anywhere else. If you are on this forum and using anything but a mac I have two words for you...Insufficiently sophisticated.

Made the jump this year. 2 iPhones, iPad, iMac, Macbook Air. Then an airport extreme.

Still have to use a PC at work.

I make sure to leave anything that can be used as a hammer in the car when I sit down in front of a PC.
