Airstream Art?

Does anyone have photos of Airstreams that have had some of their aluminum skin decorated with paint or decals or any other medium? Wife wants to decorate the rear side and back of ours.

I've often wondered about the vinyl wrap concept. Next clear coat re-do that comes (every 5-10 years if stored outside), i'll be looking into it.

Working in a sign shop I know for sure that you could always add vinyl decals or even a wrap to the aluminum. You would need to be cautious with paints though to ensure you had something that would adhere to aluminum. The skin would likely need to be acid etched or something for the paint to bond. I know I've always thought to myself that I should do a major vinyl wrap job and turn my argosy into a yellow submarine, I'll probably never do it but the thought makes me smile ☺

I'm not sure exactly what Alcoa's clear-coat formula actually is, so I'm not sure if it can get good adhesion to any particular type of paint. But if you remove the clear-coat first, and then roughen the surface of the aluminum to get good adhesion, you've got plenty of options. There are any number of paint formulas that will provide good adhesion to metals. Epoxy polyamide is my personal preference for painting metals, because it has good resistance to "extreme" atmospheric exposure, including UV, high humidity, and even salt air for coastal areas. Two-component epoxy polyamide MIL-DTL-24441 is the type of paint the Navy uses to paint everything, but you don't need mil-spec paint for an Airstream; any epoxy polyamide should work.

Also, once you've painted a graphic with epoxy polyamide, you could cover the whole graphic with a clear polyurethane paint as well, to protect it; polyurethane and epoxy polyamide bind together well.

I was sort of thinking about getting these atomic stars for the Excella we have, but now we are focused solely on our Argosy Motorhome and just using paint for the exterior. Check it out: Airstream Dream | Die Cut HutDie Cut Hut
